Well, the puppies are now 11 days old. Tragically, one of the little girls died in the middle of the night at 1 week old. Bob, my husband, who has been sleeping on the sofa next to them, had only checked them just over an hour before. We tried desperately to rescusitate her but to no avail. She was one of the biggest puppies, and we have no idea why she died. Consequently, Bob is still sleeping on the sofa and we are overfussing, but that is the way it is, anxious times. I must admit, I'm a bit paranoid about a little boy who is much smaller than the others. He gets lots of sucking time on his own but hasn't caught up in size. Fingers crossed its just me worrying and he'll be fine.
Although she is a good Mum, keeping Sophie in the box for any length of time is proving to be a bit of a fight at the moment. Even though she is in the lounge, she wants to get out and sit with us. She's also quite moody, and doesn't understand why she can't go out for a walk (even though we've promised to make it up to her when it's all over)
Anyway, I've posted a video on YouTube of the puppies at 5 days old. They're not moving much but still they are gorgeous, you can see it here
If the pups are 11 days old there is no real reason she cannot go for a walk. I'd take her out and see if it stops her being moody - if you're worried about infection just wipe her undercarriage down when you get back
You should find that at some point in the walk she will start to get that 'must rush back to the babies' feeling! I start mine off after a few days with little walks but I do avoid particularly doggy places for a wee while.
As long as the pups aren't screaming with hunger I don't think you need to worry how much time Sophie is spending in the box - Molly did exactly the same, we worried for a few days but soon realised that she KNEW when they needed feeding and cleaning.
Is there any reason why you aren't taking Sophie out? We took Molly out almost straight away, firstly just for a sniff around the lane, and then we built up to 20-30 minute walks over the next few weeks. I always gave her undercarriage a good clean when we got back but she thoroughly enjoyed those moments of escapism and was always straight in to the pups on our return.
Sorry to hear about the little girl - run free little one xx

as the others said - so long as they all seem content, I wouldn't worry too much I had a little black boy who was considerably smaller than the others (despite being an equal weight born with 2 of his siblings) and he didn't even catch up when I started weaning -
Consequently, in conjunction with the fact I was messed around by one of my buyers, he was the last of the litter to go- but he really started to blossom at around 8 weeks - and after putting his picture on CD, I was quite devastated when I was over-run with enquiries for him as I had convinced myself he was staying and had even named him (much to my OH's chargrin ) - this was him a days before he left
Thanks for your replies. I've fixed the link for the video.
With taking Sophie out, it's differing advice thing again. Some say do, some say definitely don't, so I've erred on the side of caution. There's nowhere I can walk her where I can't guarantee there won't be other dogs. Perhaps I'll try her early morning tomorrow, I know she'll appreciate it.
Sue, thanks for your note, your baby was lovely. It always helps to hear these things, I'll keep on with him but maybe won't worry so much.
I'm glad to say, I took Sophie out for a walk very early yesterday and this morning and she loved it, and is now a bit happier. She gets a full body wipe over with dettol when she gets home just to be safe Glad it was recommended.
Some of the puppies have already started standing and walking, albeit very very wobbly, but at 12-13 days old, we're still waiting for the their eyes to open (which according to the BOTB would normally happen at 7-10 days). Anyone here have puppies that have taken this long or longer?
Good to hear the pups are doing well, sorry to hear about the little girl, hope the rest continue to thrive and progress, won`t be long before they`ll be off to new homes!!
