.....i've been browsing a few sites and i have read a particular piece of info and about a breeder which supports this, it basically is against giving puppies vaccinations. There has also been an article in Dogs Today about the pros and cons of vaccinations and the yearly booster. But i just wanted to hear what you peeps on here thought? Here is the online site
Lucy is fully vaccinated but i just wanted to hear all sides for future pups etc.

Well I have no choice - no vaccinations = no camping holidays, no dog shows, no dog club, no passport, in fact very little!

I have read quite a few times that once puppies have their initial jabs then they are covered for life and the boosters aren't needed, but we have to keep them up to do date for kennels etc when required.

Oh dear. Catherine O'Driscoll has been throwing the baby out with the bath water for years.

Lets get things into perspective. Yes a very few dogs do develop a reaction to vaccines. But by the same token, before vaccines dogs did die of Distemper, Hardpad and Leptospirosis. I wont mention Parvo because that was not around before the vaccinations. Vaccines have reduced the old killers of dogs down to such small numbers as to be insignificant. Like many fanatics she only tells one side of the story.

And incidentally Linzi, the present recommendation of vaccine manufacturers is a 3 yearly booster, with the exception of Lepto, which is still yearly. (Although I have to say, not many vets will tell you that!!)

Regards, John

I have always had my dogs vaccinated regularly but since Monty developed neurological problems I became a bit concerned. So I asked my vet what he thought about not giving the vaccine this year. He confirmed pretty much what John says - he stated that the Parvo vaccine is good for 3 yrs and the distemper for 2 yrs . He also said the leptospirosis is really only needed if the dog goes swimming in swampy water, is around sewers, or in contact with sheep. So we agreed not to give the booster this year and to review the situation again next year. But we've got to remember - if it weren't for these vaccines a lot of dogs would die. It's only due to the vaccines that these conditions are now very rare.

I am fortunate to live in rural North Yorkshire but one drawback is the old fashioned ideas that still prevail in the agricultural mindset.
There is still an element around here where if an animal is sick, lame, and/or can't do it's job then it's shot. No vet fees for PTS.

I've had this debate about vaccines before, years ago, about how it's only the drug companies and the vets that benefit.
I've heard many tales about dogs (and cats) that have lived long active lives without vaccination. The thing is I've never met any of these dogs. They always belonged to someone else, or lived at some time in the past.
I have seen dogs with distemper and cats with feline leukaemia though.

As far as I am concerned, my dogs always have their vaccination boosters when they are due. For my two it's yearly.
Apart from the fact that the insurers have a section on their claim forms regarding vaccination, there is always the risk in the countryside of parvo or lepto.

For the sake of a few pounds every year I know that my lads are reasonably safe.

If I had kids I would make damn sure they had all the vaccines available. It's no different for my dogs.

Very Happy

Absolutely with JohnW on this one. Thankfully my vet does three yearly boosters with yearly lepto. They will also blood test to check immunity before boosters if owners prefer.

I am in the 3 year camp, vets are obviously going to want the yearly booster scheme as its a valuable income stream, b ut you only need them 3 yearly.

On another note, PAT now accept Homeopathic Vaccs as do many kennels and dog clubs, so if you are worried about chemical reactions or just the ethical side, then it maybe worth considering.

Both Jack and Maia this year are being protected by HP Nosodes. Wink

Mine are Vacc'd every year for something or other Confused I do think it is a biggy every 3 years though so that sounds in line with the Lepto being done on yearly basis........I'm not exact when they have them done, I usually go over the year by 3 months or so...

On another note....................we did have a pup who was very fit & healthy at 8 weeks, had its 1st jab and was dead within a week Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Was it a reaction to the Vacc Question of course, the Vets said not, but they would, wouldn't they? afterall, they had passed the pup fit & well enough to have the 1st jab Confused but then, after it had died, said it had a bad heart Confused which IMO would have been detected at the previous visit to the Vet Confused
