Yes Mary I know what you mean. Luckily for Bo I'm not a fitness freak in the slightest. My favourite mode of transport is my legs and I love walking and watching him go loopy when he smells rabbits and such. It was just that when we got the horses fit we did stuff like interval training and then you would take them in a field for a good gallop to open the windpipes but you also did slow roadwork to build up muscle tone etc. I thought a bit of road work would be good for him in moderation to build up muscle and harden his pads and make him realise that going out is not all about charging around like a mad thing chasing imaginary rabbits and birds that are 2 miles away.
I run my two girls with the bike sometimes (very rarely at the same time btw), and I just use normal but slightly longer slip leads, or a collar and long lead. I have been careful to train them to run on the correct side of the bike though, and usually as soon as I am off the more main road and onto the really wee roads I let them off so they can stop and sniff when they like, so long as they catch up.
I'm not the fastest person on a bike, so my pace suits them fine
Only just seen this thread, i have a walk your dog bike attachment, i must admit i haven't used it lately but Alfie loves it, he does a tucky bum run if he sees me get my bike out hehe I don't take him on roads though, just down country lanes where no cars really go or over the common/ heath, just as something different for him and i still let him off to have a good sniff around and do doggy things but i find with Alfie he will only really run around for a ball and i thought a 5/10 min run with the bike would do him good Alfie is a very fit dog though and i did build it up slowly
I have a friend with a BC who has one too and her dog loves it and i knew a man with a huskie who had the springer and she loved it too and none of us have ever been pulled off our bikes

Have you got the Springer or the British one? I thought the Springer looked better made but more expensive. My daughter is going to the States in October so she's going to pick me one up
I don't have the springer, i wasn't sure if i'd use it so didn't want to spend too much on it and Alfie isn't a big lab so i thought the walk your dog one would be strong enough for him, i did use my friends before i bought one though just to make sure it would be ok for Alfie but like i say he loves it, he'll be running beside the bike looking up at me constantly, i think he finds it amazing that i can keep up with him while he's running
