Yes Rhoni, I always thought that too about microchipping and I'm sure some vets will do it that young. My vet wouldn't though, he said that if he did it would proably move and it can travel down as far as the elbow and then isn't much use unless the dog is scanned all over and could possibly need to be removed.
As I say Tilly was chipped @ 8 weeks, she is now 2 and last week went for her kennel cough vacine and I asked for the chip to be checked and was still in original place...
If a dog is scaned one hopes they scan the whole body anyway....
Oh I agree with you Rhoni, I thought it was a bit odd and thought that the chances of it moving and causing a problem were outweighed by the chances of losing the puppy or getting it stolen but I'm not brave enough to argue with the vet I guess it probably depends on how well the chip is put in in the first place When I told my tattooist she was very annoyed! I'm just glad I have Darcy covered now and to be honest I do think that a visible id like the tattoo is more likely to discourage dog thieves than a chip.
In the past I have taken Coco to new vets and they have never checked the chip unless I have asked them to so for all they know she might not even be my dog

I too have heard of the chip moving if done too early. I have also heard that it is quite a painful proceedure and that the pups cry a lot more than when they are tattooed. That is the reason that we don't microchip our puppies but rather tattoo them and then recommend that our customers have the puppy microchipped when it is put under for the spaying / neutering surgery. I would feel better if the pup was both tattooed and microchipped before leaving us so would love to hear more people's experiences with the microchipping. (how the pups responded, how often the chips migrate, etc.)

Hi everyone, we're new to the forum but have been reading it for a while now.
We had Coady microchipped just after she joined us as a rescued 12 week old. She has just been speyed and the vet noticed a small lump on the side of her neck which he said to keep an eye on and to bring her back if it grew. Our friendly trainer felt it and suggested that it might just be her chip that had moved. Back to the vet, no sign of the chip where it was inserted but.... it now registers on her neck. Presumably it will continue to move around. Just hope that if she does go astray they check her all over not just on the usual site. Has anyone else any experience of travelling chips?
Hi dogwalker, I met you in class today so came home and read your message. I'd actually be quite worried about the chip moving to the neck. What if it moved somewhere quite dangerous? Can anybody make any notes on this?
Mine is chipped too, but after reading how this could happen to a chipped dog it does make one wonder Penny
Also, I believe that because dogs are considered 'property' in law, by tattoing them you are effectively 'naming' them, I'm not sure that microchips are considered 'naming' under law.
