Is there any truth to the "fact" (according to my MIL) that if a dog chases his tail that he has worms?
Confused

PS just saw my terrible typo - tale & tail..... Embarassed

I think thats an old wives tale, rubbing his bum on the carpet may be more of an indication but if he`s regularly wormed then there shouldn`t be a problem Smile

Chasing their tails is something that happens when they suddenly relise there`s something there that they prob think is toy Very Happy , they find out it isn`t when they bite it Laughing

No as other have said....there is no truth in that Old Wives Tale at all. Wink

I discourage any tail chasing though, as some dogs (usually the more highly strung ones admittedly) can develop an obsessive problem with it.

I hadn't thought to discourage Mac from doing this at all. I can see that it could become problematic though! I just think that its hilarious, because his tail is just not quite long enough to get a good grip on (or maybe he has become just a little too porky recently!)

If you watch this short vid, you'll see why I said I discourage it.

This Lab is having no encouragement to chase his tail, but the feelings tail chasing produces has become so ingrained that he just can't seem to stop.

I know a lot of people think it's funny and some actively encourage it....and I realise I might be seen as an old fogie on this one.....but it looks like a behaviour reminiscent of the pacing that you see in caged animals to me.

God just watched that vid, its disturbing! How do you stop a dog once its started? Or do you have to try to stop them as soon as they find out they can do it?

Just watched the video, it wasn't pleasant, poor dog. Morris has chased his a little, (nothing like the video though) we thought he was just playing. I will be discouraging from now on.

I have no idea how you would go about stopping a dog that had got as bad as that one on the video. Sad

I think they all discover this fluffy toy attachment at one time or another and want to play with it...I just distract them when they are pups, get them focussed on something else instead. Wink

It's when I see people tugging the dogs tail and saying "whats this" or "chase it", really egging them on, it makes me cringe. I can only assume it releases some kind of "high/happy" hormone, just as any "chase" game does, which ultimately is very addictive.

Shadow chasing/pouncing is another particular hatred of mine.....I just can't abide seeing people getting their dogs to chase a lazer light on the floor. It sets the dog up for a lifetime of trying to catch shadows and or shafts of light.
