I wonder if anyone has any bright ideas to help a lab with poorly lug'oles.
We spent today at a training day which was absolutely fantastic and he seemed to have the best time ever (as did the other participants laughing at him.....!), he showed no signs of feeling under the weather at all and appeared bright happy and on top of the world.
On the way back we went for a walk which involved water and swimming (inevitably), and tonight he has begun shaking his head is very quiet and subdued and def not feeling himself, all he wants to do is lie on his mat...apart from when he is shaking his head which he is doing a lot.
Fortunately we have a vet appt on Monday for his rabies booster so he can be checked out then and I have been putting the ear wax debris removing stuff that he hates into his ear (it is deinitely only one that is uncomfortable) and cleaning it out - needless to say it is full of muck
Does anyone have any suggestions of how I can make him more comfortable?
Fudgie gets a nasty ear after swimming and fox poo rolling etc
It seems to give him a bit of relief if I give it a good clean then just massage it with his ear down, it tends to stop any itches and sends him to sleep.
Poor Neo, it does get them down a bit.
My vet showed me what to do and now he doesn't really mind having it cleaned. I think he knows it will be better without the struggle.

For a quick remedy, have you any white vinegar? A 50/50 mix of this with warm water put into the ear will break down the wax and gunk in your dogs ear and also cleans and will help stop the growth of bacteria.
Once you put the mix in the ear, quickly close the ear and massage deeply. Then, let go and your dog will shake its head, thereby loosening the gunk - then you can wipe it clean with some cotton wool moistened in the mixture. Dry off completely with cotton wool when you have finished.
If you suspect mites, then Olive oil (or almond oil) will smother them, but you need to use this regularly for a couple of weeks - around 7 drops maximum.
Thank you so much for your suggestion - I have just cleaned his ears with the mixture and it worked at least as well as the stuff from the vet - so that is what I will use in future. Thank you so much
PS did not close one ear quick enough - I have had my morning shower - now smell like a plate of fish and chips!!!!

lol - you have no idea just how far that little bit of liquid went - trousers top glasses...... I began to wonder how much had gone in in the first place or whether it multiplied on the way out!!!!!
Have you heard of Thornit powder? It's great for cleaning the ears, is holistic, and only cost around £5 off of ebay. Here's the company's website: http://www.homoeopet.co.uk/earclear.htm
It's great for keeping ears wax free. I use it on Corbie and his ears get cleaned up within a couple of days. Only need a tiny pinch of powder in each one and no gunk to get rid of.
Corbie is really good and rolls on his side for me to put it in his ears
Wow Karen thanks for that, i will give that a go because he hates absolutely hates anything going in his ears.
He sits happily with me follows me like a shadow till he sees me go to THAT cupboard - today i thought I'd fool him with the vinegar mix - all was well until he saw the cotton wool then he turned and ran off with his tail between his legs!!!
Thank you all for your help - I am pleased to report that the ears are well on the mend now and don;t appear to need vet help!
Alfie gets gunky ears and I am keen to give the vinegar and water a try. I assume it is boiled water you use with the vinegar but how much per ear and how do you get it in the ear? Thanks in advance
The vinegar and water seems to have worked a treat. (Thanks Kyomii)
I don;t know how much I had a syringe given to me by the vet for something or other ages ago and opened that so I just put a little in, but it seems to have worked wonderfully - no more head shaking!
I used boiled water that I allowed to cool and tested the temp before I operated so to speak!!!
