Hi all we now have a new date for tia to go to liverpool this is on the 3rd of october although may have to change it to the friday with ben working away now. This is to meet the same surgen as before and we are hoping they will keep her this time and get the op done.I spent yesterday in tears as i had to phone the innsurance company up and find out how much money was left. And words could not say how i felt. When we took the plan out with petplan we was never told the differnt price plans over the phone and prob my fault to for not asking as when you have paid loads of money for a healthy pup you dont expect to need thousands how wrong was i.We currently pay 18 a month this only allows us 4k,well as tia was only 16 weeks when she was diagnosed wth servere hd the money has been going fast with her medicine and xrays.Than we was charged 654 for the xray we had in liverpool,so the grand total we have left is 2990 this doesnt cover her op.So god knows how we are going to find the rest of the money to have the amount for her op.we need about 1000 to cover eveything. So we are now worrying if they will charge us again when we meet up with them in october as i understand it was going to be on the bill that we have the estimate price for what we got when we sighned the consent form.Than petplan said if i had paid four pound more we would have had unlimted cover imagine how *****i felt.So me and my sister was thinking today that maybe we could do something to raise a bit of cash am not sure though,we wouldnt have had a problem really if i hadnt flooded the house and with ben moving away to work and him leaving down there its an extra thing to pay for,and he hasnt had his first wage yet with just staring he has had to do a month in hand.So what do you think should we can of be a bit cheeky and try to do some fund raising in our area (not sure what we could do yet thought) any ideas and thought we be welcome.Sorry for the rant on and long post love kelly ben+bethany and tia xxxxx

Oh Kelly mixed emotions here for you. On the one hand, hopefully Tia will get sorted and on the other you have this money worry.

How about having a good clear out and get family and friends to do the same and have a car boot sale. If you make a poster with with what the money is used for and maybe have Tia with you for some of the time, you may get people wanting to help.

Maybe if you explain the situation fully to the surgeon they will let you pay in installments.

Not sure what else to suggest as I think with fundraising you have to be a registered charity.

Good luck

It's a longshot but when we had Jet diagnosed, a friend mentioned both the PDSA and a Labrador charity who will help fund operations so long as they're not funding it all. It may be worth trying to find if there is somesimilar in your area. I'll see if I can get the Wiltshire name of the charity for you.

Hiya,

So sorry to hear about Tia, we are almost in exactly the same boat as you with our pup Brody, only our insurance will only cover £2000 of his £6000 op, so we have £4k to find! and we're having a baby in nov so down to one salary...He needs his op when he's mature, and he's 7 months now, so in about 7 months time. Believe me, if I had only known, firstly anything about dogs when we got him (dh was the dog lover) and secondly more about labs then I really would have got a better plan, but hindsight is a wonderful thing. And we got him from a good kc reg breeder and both his parents had hip scores under 6.

So we are the same - how can we raise the cash? We're doing a car boot tomorrow, like wendy suggested, and putting a note out to say we're raising money to save our pup, so hopefully people won't haggle to much. DH was thinking of doing dog walking, somehow we'll come up with the cash. Also, really you would be surprised what people buy at boot fairs...

We also looked into the pdsa thing and you have to be claiming housing or council tax benefit, so if you are then they would be worth contacting.

Good luck, let us know how you get on

claire and brody x x

Sorry to hear about that Claire, I do hope it all pans out in the end. I didn't realise that about the PDSA. I wonder if there's a charity out there which would help. There must be one somewhere.

Hi Kelly

Sorry to hear about the situation with insurance for Tia.

First I am a bit confused about the Petplan situation. We have Petplan for Monty and were paying around £18 a month - just gone up to £19.50 for the new insurance year just started a few weeks ago. That's for the Budget Low Xs Pedigree policy. Is that what you are on?

If so, then as I understand it, it is £4000 vets fees per insurance year. I don't know what period Tia's problem has been over, or indeed how severe it is? Perhaps it would be possible to maybe continue with the investiagtions now but possibly postpone some treatment until you get over into the next insurance year?

If that's not possible - then it may be worth trying The Dogs Trust for help. We had problems with our dalmation about five years ago and they did make a donation (though it was not a lot) towards surgery.

But I would check again regarding the insurance year with Petplan. Monty had around £3,500 in vets fees last year and £700 complimentary therapy. I am so glad we had him insured. But I must admit - I wasn't told about the no-limit plan either, or I would have paid the extra too.

Hope you get something sorted out for poor Tia.

June

That's who I was trying to think of - The Dogs Trust. The other thing to look at on the insurance is if it's a "For Life" policy, if it is, they should let treatments continue over to the next year.

I am glad to hear Tia has an appointment but saddened by your predicament Sad

When Keira was diagnosed with severe HD and had to be operated on immediately and with no insurance Embarassed I had to make a huge decision, did I lose Keira or pay. As most of you know I paid, all in all her TPO surgeries cost in the region of £3800.

It took me 18 months to pay, the vet wouldn't take instalments though. What I did was pay for it on credit card and straight away transferred the balance to a 0%. Keira's bill ended up going onto 3 different cards in the end but no interest was paid.

I am so sorry to hear about Tia (Do you think it is the name - my Tia got run over and had her pelvis crushed - she's a cat though...)

i was wondering if you could ask your vets if they know any charities that would contribute - I believe some rescue societies will if the owners cannot afford the treatment, or you can try the Dogs Trust RSPCA and PDSA (though I think they only pay for people on benefit) to see if they will help, even if it is a loan that you can pay back that may help...

So sorry to hear the news
