as some of you will have seen from my other post, i am hoping to get a litter from Daisy this season. |Not really sure how to word this as i don't want it to be construed as an advert..i'm just a bot anxious about how to get a waiting list for the pups (if we're luvky enough to be successful).
My breeder has said i will have no problem selling the pups but not sure how to go about it. I have a page on e pupz but cant seem to get one set up on champdogs..never comes up in a search.. What other ways are there. I am well aware advertising in the paper is a complete no no. I want to do it properly. i can just imagine myself with 10 labradors running round the house for months lol!!!
Hmmm i have no idea, you could PM Di or one of the others that have recently bred and ask them how they go about it, that way you can`t be construed as advertising on the forum
I think to be fair you can get into Champdogs at www.champdogs.co.uk, its pretty straightforward from there to set up a page.
The whole *thing* is that to GET a waiting list you need to have your dog out there, competing, doing well and people wanting 'one of yours'. thats not being snobby its just a fact. plenty of people who don't compete sell their pups, but hand on heart, its generally through enquiries put onto them by using a damn good stud dog who is 'out there' winning in his sphere, be that working or showing, and HIS owner getting lots of calls for puppies. Then that stud dog owner puts those people wanting his or her dogs 'get' onto you.
You can try it a different way of course but a waiting list might be stretching the boundaries of sensability as if you are not out circulating and promoting your kennel in the dog world people simply won't know about you.#
Hint - epupz is a bit of a minefield of rubbish. You get a load of enquiries but most of them wating the cheapest pup possible, and asking if you take credit cards or will discount £100 if they pay 'cash'....
If you are using a quality dog, out there winning and competing, your puppy buyers should mostly come from them. A waiting list will only be drawn up from friends and family if your bitch is not a competition dog.

I set up a page at Champdogs a few months prior to mating, really just to make sure I would be able to sell any pups before going ahead, I also made a free website and put a link to this from champdogs page......I never had any enquiries via the stud dog
BTW, newspaper advertising is not necessarily a no-no - I know of a few very successful breeders who will not run waiting lists but advertise in a decent quality national, local or free-ads paper.
It's up to you to sort out the wheat from the chaff with enquiries, no matter whether they come from word of mouth, internet or newpaper advertising
I tend to agree with newspaper advertising. As a purchaser I found it useful but then I knew excatly what to ask regarding health ckecks and the "breeder" fulfilled them all. Ok I have not got a superb show quality dog but Ive got a very nice pet chocolate who has had her own health checks done and is well, well below the mean breed average.
In an ideal world you would have a waiting list before mating I would suggest.
I have a page on champdogs, it's not complicated and is very easy to use.

This could very well be happening! Please don't be deceived and think that all breeders have a waiting list! Many gundog people breed a litter to keep 1 or 2 pups themselves then hope to sell the rest but that doesn't always happen - and that's how some ends up having to train and bring any 'left overs' on and then sell them later as part trained.
Remember also that a pup is NEVER sold unless you have a deposit! You get people saying: ' I'd really like one pup if you ever breed her' but then time passes and they forget or have got one from somewhere els or it's not the right time for them...
A web site is always a good way to tell a bit about yourself and the dogs and pups - you can put pictures on and health info. Then you need to tell lots of people that you might just breed her. Then there are magazines you can advertise in and different web sites...BUT as always be prepared that you might have some pups that 'hang back' and not sell until they are older...
I put the litter details on Champdogs as soon as I knew for definite Hally was in whelp - I had bookings for three pups almost straight away - although one buyer did mess me around causing all sorts of fun
The rest came through word of mouth and one or two through the puppy sales register on the KC website
Unfortunately, I do tend to find that so many people fail to read the 'advert' on Champdogs correctly and will contact you for colours you don't have (or even sadly quite often, don't exist in labradors ).
I had a lot more enquiries than I had visitors because I was a bit ruthless which is why Bailey is still warming his toes - he is so good I am hoping the OH won't notice he is still there

Edited to say: remind me - what colour will the pups be?
cheers, thanks all for your advice. I have set up a champ dogs page and i can view it when i log in but if i just browse as a non member it never comes up ina search!! oh well. Not to worry.
