As some of you may be aware (and fed up off!!!) I am struggling in finding a company to insure my Rogan.

What I am wanting to know is have you had to claim on your insurance, who the policy is with and the cost of it...

The reason I ask is that I am thinking of going with More Than, but you claim up to £7000 for any one illness. Can some illness easy take you up to that mark?

Yes, a hip replacement would eat into that amount very well.........

..............I have claimed for Izzy with M&S for over £4000

Molly too has an ongoing claim with More Than but I don't know how much we have spent with them, the excess is higher and also, they make you pay a percentage of the claim when it gets higher than the excess Confused

Izzy's cost £202

Molly's cost £278 ( I think)

Mojo is covered by MoreThan....I haven't had any problems with claims. I claimed for her ED surgery and treatment, which amounted to around £2500....it was settled very quickly.

I currently pay £18.99 per month...and have 15% or £70 (whichever is the greater) excess. She is covered for lifetime illnesses too.

Yes it could very easily eat into that amount, as others have said hips etc can, as can ongoing conditions such as diabetes (mums dog had this and spent thousands as she was not insured). Mine are with Pet plan as the whole benefit is renewed every year as i'm too worried they will get something that will take me over the amount and i will not be able to afford to continue their treatment. Its just an £80 excess per illness too, granted it costs more but i'm not bothered as they have always paid out very fast and i know we are covered.

Would it be an idea to open a savings account like a cash ISA and put £20 in every month? you don't have to struggle to find an insurance company and you would make the interests yourself - tax free!

I have to do it like that as mine are working dogs and no insurance company (that I know of) will insure working labs. Also as far as I know, many companies will not cover the dog once it reaches a certain age so you may argue that the money would have been better on a savings account Rolling Eyes

I know that some of you guys have had to claim big amounts from the insurance but I like to think that this is rare? otherwise I may just dispare if the majority of labs have such health...

My pets are insured with Petplan and I have claimed about £3000 for Honey's hips, and around £1000 ish for her Bronchitis.
Rosie my Jack Russell I have claimed £1000 for her hip op (what is it with my dogs and their hips? Rolling Eyes Confused ) and about £500 for skin problems.
For Oscar I claimed £250 ish for his asthma.
I had no problems with any of these claims, I think Petplan are great.
My friend has a Bulldog who had throat surgery which went wrong and he ended up in intensive care for several weeks, the total bill was nearly £12,000 which was covered without a quibble.
Sorry I don't know anything about Morethan though. Will they pay out £7000 per condition per year or just £7000 full stop?

I must say Natasha...if I had a mongrel I wouldnt bother with insurance Wink . I managed for years without it with my other dogs and only ever had one large bill (and by that time she was too old to have been covered anyway). However I'm really glad I have it for Mojo, as she was only 14 months old when her elbows cost £2500...and there is a possibility she will have problems with them in the future, so I will keep paying out.....just incase. Wink

£7000 for each illness or injury...full stop, is the way I read it.
