Hi i am after any information that anyone can give me about using my choclate boy at stud. I have had a call from a lady whos bitch should be ready friday ish for mating, the dogs have meet and where interested in each other.
My dog is not yet proven so i am only charging a small fee and then repeat mating if needed.
I know the bitch needs to come to me and the process of the mating and tie etc, but i have read before that the bitch should be muzzled??? is this correct and should i ask the owner to muzzle her, as this is my first time and my dogs first time we are both a little nrevous and confused over what happens next.
Also should i draw up a contract of some kind for the bitches owner to sign to ensure i get full payment as she is going to pay half on mating and half once confirmed litter on way.
One hopes you have satisfactory results for all the hereditary health test, otherwise you really should not be thinking about this. That is not meant to sound judgmental but it is really the baseline below which no responsible breeder or stud dog owner should go. The stud dog, therefore you, are 50% responsible for the results, and breeding blind crippled puppies would be a terrible thing. You are taking on a big responsibility.
Yes, I would be putting a soft muzzle on the bitch, she could turn very nasty and injure either your dog or one of the handlers. You can always take it off once things are all calm and settled in the tie if she's calm. Have the owners put it on her though, they will probably be able to put it on with less fuss than you would, simply because it's their dog and it doesn't sound like you've put many muzzles on.
Re the contract...
Usually you do not charge for the services of a novice dog, because he doesn't know what to do. Also, for all you know he could be shooting blanks. It's best to wait until he has healthy progeny on the ground before charging for his services.
Is the bitch a maiden (virgin) as well – because it is not advisable to use two novices together either, as it’s better if one of them knows what is about to happen.
Things can get *seriously* messy if they’re both new to the game.
Lastly, as already mentioned, I would hope that since you are charging a fee for the use of your dog, then he has had all his health checks.
Is the bitch owner new to breeding as well? Perhaps the bitch owner will know how to assist your dog?
If not, then I seriously think you should reconsider this idea... if neither of the humans know what they're doing, and neither of the dogs do, it would be terrible if something went wrong.
Please do let us know if you have any other questions.

PS I know you said you've read about matings... but have you ever witnessed any? If you are seriously wanting to get into the mating game, then you should find a good breeder (perhaps go back to the breeder of your dog?) and ask if they would mind mentoring you for a while... go and watch a few of their matings, and then assist with a few as well, you need to learn as much as you can.... charging a stud fee you should be supplying more than simply a few teaspoons of your dogs sperm. Please please please read the links posted above and have a good think about things before you accept this bitch to be mated to your dog.
Sorry but all I can say after reading that lot is "Stuff it Shadow mate, you're off to the vets sooner rather than later!"
