Our new vet thinks our previous vet is clueless and can't believe that a dog who will do four/five hour yomps rioting all the way with a pack of others, with no ill effects, has anything other than healthy hips.
I have to disagree with this - there are many, many dogs living happy active lives, completely sound, showing symptoms of HD whatsoever, and it is only discovered that they have HD when they are xrayed. I have one of them - he has excellent movement, is competely sound, will retrieve all day, clear a fence no problem and has never shown any symptomsbut xrays show he suffers from moderate HD. My vet has another - her dog regularly competes and wins at agility (and is a vizla not a collie ).
I don't mean to diminish the pain and distress that HD can cause, but sometimes there are absolutely no symptoms whatsoever, until old age, when arthritis sets in, something which can occur in dogs without HD.
If you're really worried and it's going to spoil your enjoyment of your pup (which is really sad as it should be a fun time) I assume you'll get him neutered at some point so why don't you ask the vet to x-ray his hips while already under GA to hopefully put your mind at rest
