Hi. I have just had this site recommended.
We adopted a 10 months old Golden Lab 2 months ago. His name's Max and he's a total nutter. lol.
Not had a lab before so may have questions as time goes on.
But have one for now if you can help me please.
He's not eating his meals when I put them out for him. We haven't changed his tins or mixer, and he still has them at the usual times from before we adopted him. He's very happy in himself, nose cold and wet, wee'ing and pooh'ing a plenty(sorry if tmi. lol) and playing as normal.
But it can take him hours to bother with his food. He was fine when we first had him, it's been over the last week or so. He does eventually eat, but at some very odd hours.
Should I worry? Is there anyway to get him to eat when he used to,. or should I let him lead me?
Oh, should add, he'd eat other things if given half the chance ie- biscuits etc, but don't encourage that to try to get him to eat his own food. So certainly not cause he's ill or anything
Thanks

Jo

wave Hello and Welcome to LF

Regards his food. How many meals are you feeding him? Is it a particular meal or all of them? What times are you feeding him?

I would try putting it his meal down for him at your alloted time, then after twenty minutes taking it up again of he hasn't eaten it - and so on. He will soon get the message that his meals are to be eaten when they are served... However, I ask about the number of meals as it may be that he's not particularly hungry (extremely unusual for a lab, but you never know Wink )

Thanks for the welcome.
As for how many meals? It was originally 3 a day. But in all honesty, once he started doing this with his meals we cut the middle one out hoping(hope this doesn't sound cruel?)this would get him eating properly again. But alas no. So he normally has a meal at 8am, used to have one around 1pm, then the final one at around 7/8pm.
Now he eats his first meal as late as 3pm, and his final meal at 11pm to 12pm.
He seems fine in himself, so I'm not overly concerned, but obviously would love to see him eat some more, especially as I was told these dogs could eat for England. Smile
I shall try the taking the food away routine with his tea tonight and start from there.
Thanks for your help

Jo

Hello and welcome.

Can't say much more than what Rach's already said. Shadow was the same but with him, part of the battle was that the breeder had given us 2 types of food which he said we could mix. Turned out that he only liked one of them and picked the other bits out!!!

Hi and Welcome! He's a lovely looking lad!

Two meals should be fine for him now. Hope you get some results by taking the food away again, I bet he doesn't leave many before he's tucking in again - he'll soon get the message!
