Hiya

When we bought our girl her breeder did try to encourage us to think about breeding and/or showing her as she was the best of the litter and i do have experience of breeding animals (cats though, so to me worlds apart! Shocked ).

So, We still havent made a decision but we will book all her tests anyway to see how she scores. Please correct me if i make a mistake - if we do breed her i want to get everything right, i'm certainly not a backyard breeder so just want to get everything in place in my head before we go any further. There is plenty of time as she is only a puppy still.

Tests: optigen, hips, elbows and eyes - are there any others i should get done? - does blood type matter like it does in cats?

Stud: how do i go about approaching people to use as stud? should i approach banjos fathers breeder (her breeder only has bitches and doesnt keep a stud dog), or should i be looking elsewhere.

Equipment: is there a list somewhere of the type of equipment i will need to raise a litter of puppies? (i somehow dont expect her to whelp on my lap in the way my cat queen kittens Shocked Laughing )

Age: is 2 to young/old? whats the best sort of age for a maiden girl

Colours, how does the genetics work? is there a test for what colour my girl carries. Her dad was yellow, mum was black, banjo is black - but does that mean she carries yellow or is it more complicated than that?. I have to ask as with the breed of cat i show colour is not important and not regulated by the GCCF so the genetics of what colours they carry isnt important (as all are acceptable).

I do want to point out too that if i do decide to breed her its never for monetary gain, i have yet to make a single penny from my cats and i do it because i love it, i love showing and i love producing well socialised cats with fantastic temperament who will hopefully be a credit to me their breeder and the breed itself!

thanks for your time in reading this! There is a long time before i would be able to breed her but i need to know whats involved first.

sally

Oh you are brave. Very Happy

There has been loads of past posts on breeding from start to finish. If you look in the breeding section and give yourself a day to troll through them, you should find the answers to all your questions.
Jade's blog will take you through the whelping of Jade's pups as it happens and is a fascinating read (with pics).

I'm sure the breeders will be along soon with advise as to where to start and maybe titles of some books you should be reading to prepare yourself.

I would talk to Banjo's father's owners. They have a few dogs, and seem to have some very nice stock. They know half of your girl's pedigree, and are very experienced breeders. Wink

Jades Blog can be found here:

http://www.labradorforums.co.uk/ftopict-22366-jade.html

and here:

http://www.labradorforums.co.uk/ftopict-22368-jade.html

This would also be a useful thread as it explians the fourth health test avaliable these days and very important to use:

http://www.labradorforums.co.uk/ftopict-18652.html

In answer to some of your other questions, you would ideally have your first litter from a bitch around the two and half - three years of age mark. Hip scoring and elbow scoring would ideally be undertaken at around 13/14 months of age. Optigen DNA testing can occur at any age as is based on DNA. She would need a clear paper eye certificate to cover her for the mating, whelping and the puppies leaving so get that done two or three months before mating.

Stud dogs would be best found through getting out showing her at about 6 months of age and onwards. Look around, see what you like, what is doing well, what you wander around and chat to and think 'hes superb!'. Approach people and chat. Go for an experienced stud dog for a maiden bitch not a first timer if possible. Ditto the handler, use someone who knows their stuff not someone at it for the first time. You can sometimes manage a maiden dog/Maiden bitch mating but NOT if both sets of handlers are 'maidens' too!.

I think you found the list of equipment in the previous thread you bookmarked.

No blood type doesn't matter in dog breeding.

Chances *are* your girl will indeed be black carrying yellow. The fact one parent was yellow means she will definately carry it. If close up relatives were chocolate she *may* be the only other combination she could possible be which is black carrying yellow and chocolate.... but that really is likely IF there are one or more chocolates close within her pedigree.

So if you mate her to a yellow you should have a black / yellow litter.
Ditto if you mate her to a black carrying yellow although statistically the proportion of yellow puppies she throws may be reduced.
If you mate her to a dominant black all the puppies will be black.

Good luck
Di

Thanks Di your a star! i plan on getting out to a couple of shows when i am driving Embarassed , its going to be a busy year! cat shows, dog shows!

Is it worth getting her DNA tested for colour? i plan on organising optigen v soon and then hips, eye and elbow scores once she has reached a year old (probably this time next year).

how do i go about applying for an affix? i presume its the same procedure as with cats? e.g. belonging to a breed club and getting at least two people to nominate you for your prefix with the gccf (although in this case affix with the KC)

Crumbs, i have loads of questions too about dog shows! lol, oh well they can wait for another day! however is it ok to attend dog shows as a bystander (without your dog) a couple of times to see how things are done?

ty again!

Apply for your Kennel Affix using this form

You can DNA coat colour at Vetgen or Healthgene and if you look at Optigen, they list all the 20/20 clinics coming up.............there is one in September with Val Tiller in Surrey if you wanted to get on with it ( I think it's too late to use Di's now isn't it? ) and you can go along and watch the dog shows at ringside too.....

Thanks Denise, it is just one day too late to use my Optigen clinic but I will run another in the New year as this one was so unbelieveably oversubscribed and popular.

Affixes are obtained on the form Denise gave you, and no, its a different system. was only talking about this with a cat fancier last month. You do it all yourself. belonging to a breed club is not necessary. JOINING breed clubs means the usual two members to sign you in, but you don't have to belong to a breed club to apply for a kennel name/affix.

Its a much quicker easier process than it used to be.

To be practical and honest, do you know the colur of what is behind your girl other than parents, or can you post her pedigree? If she doesn't have any chocolate within about 4 generations there is almost no chance she will carry it so she can ONLY be black carrying yellow. Infact if you use a yellow or black stud dog DNA tested not to carry chocolate you save yourself the trouble anyway of testing your girl. Anyhow its not a problem if she does carry chocolate, it doesn't affect HEALTH like slightly oddly matched colour matings can in cats, just a bit of different colour pigment on a small amount of the puppies.

But as I say no real need if nothing in 4 or so generations IS chocolate. Is her pedigree up somewhere, Xena seemed to know it?

Found it! On the family tree forum. A royally bred Rocheby lady then?! Yes agree leaning towards using a Rocheby dog in the future may well be a very good way forward.

ty so much Di, i have just given myself eyeball ache reading all 96 pages of jades blog and the other on her pregnancy! WOW! ty so much for posting it all as its a definate eye opener, and i'm sure it will help me in the long run if we do decide to breed!

Like i said before were still considering things, but being the neurotic person i am, i like to have everything organised in my head before making final decisions (and the final decision cant come before all her health tests have been done).

Keep me posted on your new-yr optigen clinic!

i'm sure i'll be back later with more questions lol Embarassed
