Hiliary

Your need to go through yourself what I have and what sue is going through now as with Jen D ......

Putting a dog through the discomfort he is now is totaly unfair on his well being .....

I m sorry but its called been relistic .....

I m lucky pepsi has age on her side and I ll keep her has comfortable as I can bt when she starts fading I m dont going to keep her with me just for the sake of it ...its wouldnt be what Pepsi would want ......

I don't think anyone is saying give up. Problem is that Sue hasn't been back for anyone to find out just how bad he is. It is difficult to know what to do when chatting in a forum and not "being there" to see for ourselves, all anyone can do is give their opinion based on the information given.

I know that at the moment Shani is living with congested heart failure on a daily basis with her beloved Pepsi and was given the option to be PTS, but Shani and her family decided against it. They are taking things day to day and letting Pepsi enjoy her life as fully as she can. I know how difficult it is knowing that either long or short term you are going to have to make that decision. I went through it with Coogie who was unwell for approx 2 years, but I knew when she had had enough.

I hope Sue does come back on so that we can try to help her, but to say that we are "giving up" is simply not true and personally I would take umbridge if anyone thought that of me.

I think the problem is that our dogs would always want to stay with us, and cannot make that decision for themselves, which is why people have to have that responsibility and be brave enough to make that awful decision when the time comes. If Buster is gasping for air and coughing up blood, then I think the poster is facing up to this and thinking of him rather than her herself.

On the other hand, I think that if your vet was concerned to that degree, he wouldn't have had you wait 10 days before coming back. I know that steroids in particular (the prednisolone), as well as diuretics to an extent (the frusemide) can take a good few days to kick in and work, so he might have a very real hope of improving things for a while Buster, or I think he would have wanted you back sooner than the 10 days if he thought Buster was really suffering.

Is your vet open to having a chat over the phone before the 10 days is up? I think the best option may be to talk this through with him. He is the best placed to either support you in your decision, so you know you are really doing the best thing for your boy and stopping his pain, or reassure you of what he is trying to achieve with the medication, and then you can discuss whether that is the quality of life you are happy for Buster to have, and take things from there.

We can offer you all the advice in the world, but only you and your vet know the reality of his symptoms and his quality of life, and can make that decision together.

Sending loads of hugs to you and your children, it really must be an awful thing to have to go through x

Excellent information Sarah Smile

Coogie was on Prednisolone for a long time and it actually made her worse as it brought on Cushings Disease which the vet said is one of the side effects.
