Just making me giggle that if John Halstead Jr came out with all his dfogs in hearts and diamante collars one season, EVERYONE would suddenly do nothing BUT take their dogs out in similar ones in the FT community Not jesting! They would all look wildly at one another and go....oh! Its a MUST HAVE!
I have a confession.... Rachel, Marie and I were at Pets at Home yesterday fior emergency (and extortinate) supplies of JWB and they picked up a dogs cliothing and accessories booklet. We were flicking through mocking the outfits and sayin 'OH but HOW demeaning...' and THEN.....
..... I saw a Dog T shirt with 'BONE Idle' in the back of it..... I HAVE to have one for Deeds, it could have been MADE for him!!!!!
Grin...chortle....kidding.....well mostly.....

Thank you ,some good advice there ,I will now know which questions to ask !
Am however feeling a little sorry about posting the question as I fear its turning into a bit of a witch hunt ? As I am not familiar with the forum maybe I have just misread it ?
I only merely wanted to know if anyone had a dog or knew of someone with one ,didn't mean to start a slur campaign against what could be a good honest responsible breeder .

My apologies .
Hi,
I'm sorry if you think that this has turned into a witch hunt- I don't think that anyone intended it to and, having read back through the posts that have been made, I'm not sure which part you may have taken to be meant in that way?
Is it because of the comments on hip scores and optigen testing? If so, I think that the comments were only ever made with the best intentions as most caring lab breeders are very concerned about producing pups with the best possible chance of good , lifelong health and there are so many incidents where people have bought a pup, and haven't fully understood about health testing and then have had heartache all round.
I don't think that anyone is condemning this breeder in anyway, only advising you what questions to ask before making a decision.
Thats the way I have read it to mean anyway! I hope this hasn't put you off the forum - I know that sometimes the written word can sound harsher than the spoken word.
Best of luck in your search for your pup,
Becs and the Gang
Just another thought:
If a breeder has enough confidence in their dogs and breeding program to develop an advert on the internet to advertise then, in my opinion, they are opening themselves up for honest questions maybe?
No one is on a witch hunt Skatty. The problem is that this is a simply enormous breed. A breed which has some wonderful breeders, but a breed which has attracted some breeders of the worst possible kind. But there are so many breeders that no one can hope to know them all, either good or bad. Web sites are OK, but they tell you nothing at all about the breeder, or the dogs. I looked to see the pedigrees of the dogs to see if there was anything there which could tell me something about the breeder. Yes, a pedigree can tell you so much if you know what to look at, but unfortunately that part of the site was not working. So the only thing anyone can do to give you any sort of guidance is to let you know the questions to ask. Armed with these questions you can, hopefully, avoid falling into a trap.
We are lucky, and YOU are lucky that we have some really knowledgeable people on this forum. People who know Labs from the show point of view and as in this case, people who know working lines. And you have been given advice from several. People like Natasha, Di and Jill have so many years of experience of working dogs, believe me, when they speak we listen! Go look at the Lab Health website which Sue has at the foot of her post. It’s worth a read, believe me, and that is not because I contributed to it.
Nothing has been pre judged, go look, question, then make your mind up.
Sorry if we went off topic with the collars etc. just a bit of fun nothing to do with the breeder!
You did ask for our comments and I believe these have been given. I do know the breeder of the stud dog and the stud dog is related to my bitch hence the comment on Optigen Testing. She has been tested but I do not believe that the breeder of the stud dog has taken this test on board yet.
If you have already decided to have a pup that is your choice. I purely said that I would not, knowing the pedigree, without Optigen Testing.
Thanks ,I appreciate the advice
I just put myself into the breeders shoes and wouldnt have like to have read the post ,so felt a bit guilty about it .
im new to this 'breeder' business ,when I have had dogs before It was just a case of opening the paper adn buying one or a friend of a friend
Have to admit though ( all be it more good luck than good management ) we had a 15 yr old lab with no health probs and now a 14 yr old lab/collie cross who thinks she is a puppy
I really would go the breed club puppy register route that is mentioned - it will save you scratching your head and wondering if you are ticking the right boxes....
Do you need the list of breed clubs to help you find one in your area?
