Hi All

Just wondering what the general beliefs are for letting your pup have fun in the sun - in the garden??

Phoebe has had her first set of innoculations and we have just started to let her out in the garden - supervised. She loves the flowers and it is quite hard work stopping her from pulling the petals off each one she finds. She has also taken to digging....

But the question - is it safe to let her in the garden without all the second set of innoculations??

Many thanks

Lee

I think, and I could be wrong, but unless you have other animals in your garden which are not vaccinated, you're fine letting your dog out in your garden.

We are a little bit cautious as we have seen badgers and foxes Smile in the bottom of our garden. We also live very close to a stream so there's quite a high chance of there being rats too Shocked.

I have always let my puppies in the garden even before their first set of jabs. I have always thought this is OK - I think the risk comes in the "big bad open world" as lots of other dogs have been in the areas.

As long as Phoebe is supervised in the garden then I don't see any problem with it.

Yes, as the others have said its absolutely fine for her to go out into the garden. Both Danny and Jake were out in the garden from day one of coming home...

We also let Morris into the garden, always supervised, from his first set of jabs at 10 weeks. He has alwys tried to eat the stones, bark, grass etc but after much constant leave and no is getting much better.
Tomorrow we can take him out into the exciting big world, can't wait.

I think for the sake of your sanity you have to let puppies out in the garden!

Much less traumatic if they let off steam in the garden rather than in the house, and of course it helps with toilet training too.

Hi Lee,
We have let Casper out in the garden since the first day we got him at 7 and a half weeks. He has always loved it and still does.. He pulls leaves off my plants and flowers (and is still doing it at 14 months!!). We have got a lot of gravel inour garden too which he loves picking up and charging around with. We used to tell him off for picking it up when he was little, but it fell on deaf ears - but he has never swallowed any. He spits it out in his own time then claws the lawn to try find it again..

I'm sure Pheobe will be fine if you keep your eye on her!! What a beautiful name Smile

We bought Casper a doggie paddling pool a few weeks ago (which is coming in very handy especially today as it is roasting in our back garden). He absolutely LOVES it and we just laugh our heads off at him!! He is so comical..

From Casper's Mummy x

Most animals likely to be in your garden will pose no risk. Birds, rabbits, hedgehogs and the like are perfectly safe, with the possible exception of fleas (which are always likely to be a risk anyway.) Foxes are a little more of a risk, but you can't wrap a puppy up in cotton wool forever. My pups are free to go into the garden right fron day one, although from the training point of view I like, as far as possible, to be in the garden with them. That way I can start correcting the pup when it tries to go on the garden or decides to take a dip in the pond.

I must admit that it does appear that our life goes onto hold when a puppy arrives, but a clear consistent lead at this point makes it all the sooner that we can relax again.

Regards, John
