Hi everyone,

Puppy is due to be picked up tomorrow morning, yippee!!! But now I've had an e-mail from the breeder to say that she isn't going to be there tomorrow but her husband will be so no problems. I have never spoken to her husband so he doesn't know what I'm looking for. I haven't seen the pups yet and I had hoped for the breeder's input into tht best pup for me (I mean, the last time I picked a pup it was "I'll have that one as it has a cute spot on its ear!!")

I can't change tomorrow now (and this wasn't suggested anyway) as I have arranged for a friend to come with me to cuddle puppy on way back and OH can stay at home to dog sit and kid sit (it's a 6 hour round trip to the breeders at least).

I just ain't got a clue which pup to pick!!!

Am I over-reacting?

Rant over.....!!!!!!!!

Vicki

Hmmmm... I would be concerned and angry about this too - unless the husband knows as much as the lady breeder, which could be the case, i.e. they are both involved with the litters etc. However, if the husband is not involved in the breeding of the dogs I personally would want to wait and see the woman....

That's why I think I'm most annoyed - tomorrow is the date the breeder gave to me 5 weeks ago when I first enquired! She told me to collect on the 25th, surely she'd have known then that she had a show booked?

Her husband has not been mentioned before and he is not listed on the breeder pages on Champdogs. I'm not saying this means for certain he's not involved, but I'm not convinved he is.

Everything else all "stacks up" with the breeder and I was so pleased with everything, but I thought I would have been given some guidance as to which pup I should have! (I have a choice of 3!)

Hmmmm... Yes I know how you feel Vicky. I am not a breeder, but hopefully someone who is and has experience of this will see this and provide you with some more info...

Difficult one this and not something I have personal experience of. Do you have a phone/mobile number for the breeder to see if she will be there later that day? E-mail is all very well but actually talking to someone can solve a lot of potential problems.

Yeah I have a number for her (and she has mine!) but she's made it clear she won't be there all day as she will be at a dog show in Scotland (pup is in the midlands). I just don't know what to do... Incidentally I did try calling her earlier in the week, twice, but couldn't get through, hence why I had sent an e-mail to say I will be there around 10.30am to collect pup. Then I had this reply about her not being there...no apologies or anything! Confused Sad

Werent you give the chance to view/pick a pup when they were a little younger. Most breeders let you go along say when they are 5 or 6 weeks old and thats when you pick your pup, then go back when the pup is 8 weeks or old to collect him or her. That they you can pick the one you want when the whole litter is aroung. What if you get there tomorrow and some of the litter has already gone and you wont have much of a choice - especially with the breeder away. Did she not ask you already what sort you are after, then she could have said to her OH I would suggest either that one or that one.

Its difficult but I would wait for her to be there. We also had a 6 hour round trip to pick up our Kimmy, but we went to look at him at 5 weeks and then picked him up at 10 weeks. I wouldnt go all that way and not know which dog I was picking up - you might go home with one your not happy with.

I would also find a number to ring her and see if her OH is as knowledgeable as her.

Hope it all goes OK - keep us posted.

I was just going to say the same thing. I would not go and get a puppy without viewing them beforehand.

Apart from looking at the puppy, you need to take the breeder into consideration/the breeder's premises etc.

You need to also be able to bond with your breeder in case you need support.

Have you paid a deposit? No money should exchange hands until you have seen and are happy with the litter and breeder in general.

I do wish you the very best. You could always go to see them tomorrow, and if you have not paid a deposit and are not happy, you do not need to buy.

If you are happy, then all is well Smile

How far do you have to travel to see the pups? If it's not too far I would suggest going to see them and then consider going back the following day to see and speak to the breeder.
Failing that, telephone the breeder's husband and ask if she will be at home the following day and arrange to go see them then. One day won't make a real difference.
A word of caution though. Do not, I repeat, do not go all gushy on the first pup you see. Check them for any signs of eye discharge, ask about eyes and hip scores. If in doubt make a list of questions you want answered and take it with you.
Remember you are buying what is after all a long term investment and you have a right to be cautious.

In fact check out this topic it will be very helpful.

In fairness yes we were given the option, but we have been away on honeymoon and haven't been able to get there. I spent a long time chatting to the breeder on the phone to make sure everything was right (I've been looking for this pup for months and have turned several down already because things haven't been right), and I was happy with the pedigree etc. The breeder has assured me all the long I will have first pick of all 3 boys, hence why I am going there early tomorrow morning.

I don't know, maybe I have put too much trust in the breeder? Sad

We've discussed at length the type of pup I want - ie I don't want the "leader of the bunch" and whilst the pup isn't for showing, I may enter him in a few local fun shows so take that into consideration as well.

I'm starting to think I've done this all wrong....... Sad
