and also ... when is it they can start holding themselves he is 15 weeks tomorow ... and at the moment he goes out for a wee around 10.30pm and then we wake at 7.30 and hes always weed on the paper, and somtimes a poo, is this ok at this age ??

If he has got diarrhia I would do a 24 hour starve... then introduce his food back, or some people prefer to give a blander meal like chicken and rice or scrambled eggs etc. Personally I don't bother with that and go straight back to their regular food.

With regards to "holding it"... I think this depends... plus if you are using the paper method this won't be encouraging him to hold it, but actually doing the opposite - giving him permission to "go"... we used this method with Danny and he was 6 months before he was clean during the night. But with Jake (16 weeks) we have used a crate and he is now dry between 11.00 to 6.00ish....do you use a crate?

hi thanks for your reply! ...

We do use a crate but only for when we go out, upto about an hour so far, during the night tho he sleeps in the kitchen on his bed, and i put paper down infront of the kitchen door,
( have already fed breaky, he was fine yesterday but had scrambled egg for breaky wonder if it could have been this?)

could you explain the "go" thing ? i was going to try crating him at night but thought hed got used to the kitchen and it sempt more "comfy" Embarassed lol

soppy and Bosun!

Sorry, I didn't explain myself very well did I Rolling Eyes

What I mean is, that by putting the paper down you are giving him permission to go to the loo during the night - that its OK because he has paper to do it on. If you were to crate him at night until he's clean then he wouldn't go to the toilet in the crate as he wouldn't do it in his bed...thus you then have a clean dog during the night...

Does this make more sense? (I am terrible at explaining things sometimes Embarassed )

yeah that does make sence! .... when i first tried crating for 10 mins he did wee and poo in there so makes me think over night he may do it again ... do i just put his blanket in there as normal and nothing else ?
i spose in a way i feel cruel! .. (not sure thats the right way to word it) lol
I would love to crack the nighttime wetting so could give it a go, do you think its likely he would cry? .. and if he does would it be because he needs the loo or wants out? ...

thanks Kirsty x

I would put his blanket it and perhaps a toy or two... I know what you mean about it seeming cruel - I felt like this at first, but they soon get used to it being their "den" and happily go in there.

He will probably cry, yes, and I would try to ignore this - don't make the same mistake as me Embarassed and go down or you'll have him barking for attention at all hours!!! Basically, I would arrange to get up in the night (say 3.00/3.30) at first, go down and pop him outside, not speaking to him other than to praise him for doing his business, back in the crate until its time to get up - and gradually lengthen the amount of time you're leaving him or if he doesn't want to go to the loo leave him a bit longer (so 4.00-5.00 and so on)... eventually after a couple of weeks he should go through without crying and without toileting. Very Happy

I am not sure if I could do a 24 hour starve at 15 weeks, but I assume Bosun is on 3 meals a day ?

Brooke was Poorly at 14 weeks, and I was amazed at how quickly the condition fell off her.

If it is just runs, I would miss his breakfast and lunch, and then give a very small amount of his own food about 5ish, if that stayed in, i would give another very small meal about 9. If he starts to be sick also, I would give the vet a call, they can become dehydrated very quickly at that age, so watch to see he is drinking plenty.

Actualy that's not the question. Some are simply amazing in how much control they have. Amy could and did last all night before she was 8 weeks old. Anna on the other hand was still making mistakes at nearly 6 months! The question is, at what point does it dawn on them that there is a "Correct" and "Incorrect" place to toilet? Just imagine, in the wild they would go wherever they felt they needed to go. There would, (Certainly as a puppy) be no reason to not go, except to avoid soiling the nest. In the early stage "the nest" is little more than the area they lay on, but as they get bigger so the area the nest encompases greater and greater areas until it takes in all of the "Indoors"

I have to admit, since the advent of crates, house training has got so much easier, simply by reducing the available area to toilet to just the size of the nest, so the pup's inbuilt reluctance to soil it's nest is brought into play. I was late starting with crates, being reluctant to cage my dogs, but I have to admit, it does work.

Regards, John
