I was just curious as to how everyone deals with mealtimes and puppy's. Here we put Bea into the kitchen (where her crate is) and shut the door until everyone has finished eating. She is not always happy about this especially as my young boys can take ages to eat but it seems like a good rule.

We always used to put Fudge in her crate with a treat at mealtimes...it didn't take long for her to notice me dishing up and go in there of her own accord and wait for her treat...now she is no longer crated she tries her luck at lying next to the table but I tell her away and she lies somewhere ele where she can still see us from a distance Laughing Laughing

What kind of treat would you put in the crate Sheena? Just a bit of dry food/coachie sort of thing? Bea is getting quite alot of them in her training and good behaviour throughout the day.

I taught Alfie to leave my dinner from day 1, i usually eat with my dinner on my lap though Embarassed and his crate was in his room next to the utility so if i put him in there then he'd be completely out of the way Confused i wanted to be able to have him around while i ate and for him to know its not his food so i decided to train him to leave and then reward him at the end. I can know put my plate down and walk out of the room and know it'll still be there when i come back Very Happy I guess it just depends on your situation and what works best Very Happy

LMAO I *thought* I could do that too!!!
Until last week I was practicing a new banana cupcake recipe and I went out of the room for a drink, leaving 2 cupcakes on the coffee table... came back and there was only one!
I never even found the paper cupcake case, he must have scoffed it in one swoop. He does love bananas though Smile

But we're the same, we eat dinner with plates on our laps, and Ozzie knows he has to go sit on the other side of the room. If he doesn't settle and keeps coming over for a stickybeak at the yummy smells on our plates, he is put in the kitchen with the stairgate closed. But we don't need to do that very often these days.

I use a tray on my lap as well and Bailey will come over to investigate but then goes and lies down out of the way.
