Just over 2 hours ago we were celebrating Morris sleeping through the night. Oh goodness he's spoilt it now
After breakfast at 7am, he's gone into the garden with 2 of the children aged 9 and 7, and just out of nowhere went nuts, barking, racing around and scarily jumping up at the 7 year old, biting the bottom of his t-shirt and scratching his back with his nails. We all stood still and tried not to make too much noise (hard when the 7 year old is crying!) but Morris just carried on.
Oooh I've read about puppies doing this on previous threads, but this was our first encounter and it really was scary - please help. We're not blaming Morris, more I'm blaming myself for not being able to control the situation. Advice gratefully received.
Oh It sounds like he has just had his first Bum Tucky Crocodile moment. Excess energy and excitement, switch the brain off and the instincts on full blast and that's what happens.
Don't worry it happens to the best of us, I would just get the kids indoors and leave him to it in the garden. It doesn't take long to burn off the energy, then normal service is resumed.
If you know it is going to a regular thing in the morning, then just don't let the kids out there with him, until he has got it out of his system.
It's just the joy of being alive! Anna built a race track round the greenhouse. There was no grass there at all. Occasionally they just need to let off steam.
Yes it's just their excitement that another new day has arrived. Unfortunately when they are young it can be coupled with teeth.
When Basil was especially happy as a pup he would be more mouthy (eg when we came home) we used to put a toy in his mouth and then satroke him. It's stuck because now every time we come home or when we get up in a morning the first thing he does is look for a toy to pick up. I guess it became a habit.
Harry still has bum-tucks and he's 12 months old. He charges around the garden in large circles jumping over the shrubs in the middle.
Perro stands on the patio out of the way and as Harry comes charging past he jumps at Harry to give him a little encouragement to do another circuit.
Perro doesn't have bum-tucks anymore, I suppose he's grown out of it.

It's just a "mad minute" as we call it, but commonly known as bum-tuck runs.
It is a surge of energy and excitement and they run around fast - often banging into things - to disperse it
They are mouthy when young and the golden rule we have is to never attempt to stop them/stand in their way/stroke them - otherwise this will lead to biting. Just let the pup get on with it, it lasts all of a minute or two.
Huge thanks everyone, it did just last about 2 minutes, seemed more like 2 hours though especially to Henry (aged 7 and great puppy play height!) who bore the scratch marks! Advice taken and we'll head for cover next time
Sounds perfectly normal.... the best thing is to get out of the way and let him get on with it!!!! It sounds like you kids were unfortunately in the way on this occasion...
Jake has at least one of these a day - usually being watched and followed by a confused Danny wondering what on earth is going on....

Coal normally starts his after he's been told off and uses the sofa as a spring board! so i open the patio door and off he runs out into the garden to go mad for a few moments.
learnt early on not to get in his way!!! i've even been known to sit on the kitchen counter to avoid him!
