Morris is 13 weeks old and now goes in crate well for bed, sleeps 5.5 or maybe 6 hours, barks/whines to go loo, but will not go back in crate for sleep after.
I cover crate, given him t-shirt, radio 2 on, have tried waking him before he wakes us but no success.
He does whine/yap before he settles in the day as well, but not too badly and on the whole is a great dog, it's just this waking up thing.
Will it get better? Perhaps when we can go out on Saturday may make him a little more knackered-we can hope!
Any suggestions please
Maybe i'm really mean. But if it's not time to get up in our house then it's not time for Basil to get up either.
I don't think it matters that he won't go back to sleep. If you want him to go back in his crate for a while longer while you get more sleep then he should go back in after his toilet break.
Give him a toy or maybe a bit of his breakfast in a kong to keep him quiet and leave him to it. In time he'll associate going back in after his morning wee with brekkie and it should get easier.
Hi there, sounds as if morris is doing great, i think like you said once he is a little more tired with excerise he will sleep a little longer. Bailey is the same age and he was sleeping the same amount as morris, but now he is going an extra hour, (from around 10.30 - 6). Good luck im sure he will get better.
If he goes to bed at 10.30, he wakes around 4 (could be a little earlier), if bed at 11 could be 4.30 or 5, it's after that time he just wants to be awake.
This morning it was 4am (after 5.5 hours sleep), gave him Kong and he whined/barked on and off with it until 5.30am (which is an OK time for us to get up)
oh dear that is early. that's not an early brekkie its almost the middle of the night.
Im sure it will get better with time. Are you getting up to his bark to let him toilet?
If so try making him wait a just little longer each morning, just 10 minutes or so.
Hope someone else can offer better advice Basil never got up that early.

What time is his last feed at night? How many feeds a day?
The later you leave his last feed, the later he may wake or want his breakfast, so if you can span it out over the day so his last feed is an hour or so later, it may help.
When you take him out for his pee in the middle of the night, do not communicate with him, as little as eye contact and fuss as possible, then straight back into crate.
Make sure he has water in case he gets thirsty and if he cries, leave him to it!
He will soon learn that crying will not get him anywhere, but you must be consistent and have patience for a while, as he is used to making a fuss so he does not have to go back in his crate..
Sleep or awake in his crate does not matter - it is irrelevant, you need to be the boss and decide what get up time is.

Feed at 7am, 1.00pm and Last feed at 6.30pm and he sometimes toilets before bed, but sometimes doesn't. How late could I leave the last one, he never cries for his food so it wouldn't bother him.
I do leave him to whinge in the crate but at most for about 2 hours.
