Only a fool would take desposits before whelping... or even in the first week or so till you know what will make it and what won't.
generally speaking many know how many roughly they are getting by way of a scan and a sensible breeder would take maybe 3 and 3 calls and names for dogs and bitches then take a few numbers to call if they get more than that or an uneven amount of dogs and bitches as 'reserves'. You tend to find people on resrve lists go elsewhere by the time you call anyway however, often hence puppies coming avaliable once born.
ALSO, take my last litter. The genetic set up offered me a mixed chocolate / black litter. So I had 4 for blacks and 4 for chocolates earmarked.
Then she serves me up eight blacks only! No choccies! So hence my black people are laughing but means my chocolate people need to be put elsewhere and new black people found.
hence its very nice and all that to say before whelping one has a full waiting list but it rarely stays like that!

I must confess I take deposits before whelping and have a bit in my pup contract saying the deposit is refundable if circumstances dictate there isn't a pup, afterall how many people do you get want pups before they are born, so you think you have everything covered, litter whelps and people have gone elsewhere and not told you very frustrating, so I ask for a deposit once I know bitch is in whelp, shows peeps are genuine and I have done this with matings I have bought pups from.
My dog pup Bran was one of 13 !! and the last litter Rogan sired was 13 too
Very interesting (and different ) theories about taking deposits.
I had a several people interested when we were just 'thinking' of having a litter, they stuck with us during the lengthy 'planning' phase and were just as excited as we were when it was confirmed she was in whelp. By this stage we all knew each other pretty well and our mutual commitment was based on trust (as well as Molly producing the desired pups!)
We had a further frenzy of interest just after the pups were born, I didn't feel I could take deposits from people when I wasn't allowing them to see the puppies for a few weeks! So on to my list they went and I emailed them lots of photos and updates.
The pups are now 4 weeks, the viewings have started and I am now taking deposits. It has all worked out very well - but I am a newbie at this so it may be just beginner's luck!
