Hello,
This question might sound a bit stupid but I was wondering how many pups are born in a usual/normal litter. And also, is there a record for the most pups born in a litter.
The puppy we are getting (on friday woo hoo) is from a litter of 11, which I thought was a lot compared to other litters I have heard of, or is it?
Oooooh think litter sizes can vary enormously from one pup upwards although think the average for labs is somewhere in the region of 8 (which is exactly what we had) - but I know there have been a few members whose bitches whelped just before us who had (from memory) 11 and 13 - and I know of a couple of people who have had 14 I would have been on the grass with an empty bottle of gin
Dora was one of 12. Her mum has had several litters and she has between 10 and 12 everytime. Dora is to be mated soon and I hope she has only about 7, for her sake and mine.
Sorry to jump in on the thread.
If 6 -9 is the average is that how many typically you would take deposits from / put on a wait list for new owners.
Or is there often a number 10 on the wait list that just crosses his/her fingers?
I know that's the point of a wait list but I would imagine you only go up to a certain number surely?
Is that why sometimes you see an odd dog or two from a very good litter advertised at short notice (or maybe thats cancellations)
Can tell you what my dally breeder has done - she has a list in order for 4 boys and 4 girls (i am top boy, behind her hehe) she hasnt taken any kind of deposit and doesnt until all pups are born I think even at 4 weeks tbh. Then in addition she has a further 10 people on reserve in case its a huge litter or some of her waiting list fall off. HTH
