" Where possible, do you think it would be better for a "stressy" bitch to spend a week or so living alongside the stud dog so that she "gets to know" him, while she isn't in season...so that when she is ripe and ready, all introductions and wooing are unnecessary???? Or is that humanizing the situation too much? "
Good question, and this is only my opinion.
I don't think it would make a jot of difference when it came to the crunch.
As i say, i have used my own girls on my own dogs from time to time, and if they are 'easy' they are easy here OR outside to a strange dog. If they are hard to mate, they are difficult here or to a strange dog. I quoted Jade. She was absolutely going to kill my Dylan. But was bloodtested ready and produced 7 puppies so WAS ready.... but objected very violently to him mating her. She went to Water Reed having never met him, was marginally better but still vocal (and you would still wear a jacket to hold her) and produced 8 puppies....
one bitch is nothing to base an opinion on, and i'm not, but just a demonstration.
MOST stud dog owners would not have a bitch around for a week just to 'get to know him'. To be honest its about the drive, or lack of she has at the crutial time. its about her level of personal dominance what she will and won't submit to WILLINGLY. Rather than how well she knows him.
It IS all terribly unnatural. I would be the first to admit it. We pick who they mate, when they mate and in what circumstance. But everything in a domestic dogs life is dictated from birth almost. They are used to it generally

Thanks Di.....I have said it before...but I'm so glad I have spayed girls...I really don't think I have the nerve for the mating game.

OK..so what about a few letters, a photo and then some phone calls (or texting for the modern young bitches and dogs!)

Thanks or this post, it is really interesting, I never realised what went on 'behind the scenes', I seriously thought that the 2 owners would sit drinking tea in the sunshine whilst the 2 doggies got busy, how wrong I was...??!
Think I will be getting in line for your book, will pencil it in for Aug 2022

In conclusion I would well leave alone and not breed from unwilling bitches, unwilling studs, dogs that have nothing "in black and white" to meet the breed standard - show and performance wise, and accebtable health clearings of course - but hey, I'm living in an in an ideal world...
+ 45.000 labradors were registered in the UK last year!
