When we visited Archies breeder for the first time, the first thing she said to us was never leave him on his own outside a shop even if it is just for a minute and i havent ever.
Pups get stolen all the time and driven up and down the country and sold in pubs and advertised in the paper.
I agree with those ladies but they should have had a quiet word with you and not made it so publc,i think everyone loves labs and some people are unable to afford one,so they take someone elses, also they take dogs from gardens
I always used to take my dogs to the shops whether pedigree or crossbreed. That all changed just before Christmas last year when I went to the local shop with my beardie, left her outside as normal.
When I came back out someone had undone her lead and she had run off, obviously looking for me. Unfortunately, she was hit by a bus and had to be pts
I never take CD to the shops with me, not only for this reason but also the dogknapping fear.
Like Karen, because of where I live it's not really a problem. I've always left them them outside if I'm just popping in for something quick. Obviously not if I'm doing a big shop. Because it's such a small place people tend to know who's dog is who's and there will usually be enough people around that no one would try to take a dog. That's one bonus about living on an Island. I don't think I've ever heard of anything like that happening here.
Luck you for still having a dog. Better having a telling off by a couple of old ladies than rspca knocking on your door about you leaving your dog. Luck you weren't reported.
In 1 min of leaving your dog it could of been stolen not to be seen again.
Whilst I appreciate advice and comments blackbird, I did have my eye on her from inside and I was not far away. I am not an irresponsible person in that I would leave her for hours on her own outside whilst I went and had dinner or something> I was gone for a few minutes. I doubt the RSPCA would have much ground on pulling me up having had dogs in the past and nothing happening to them - one of which lived till a ripe old age of 16. I can't be doing too badly. I just wanted some friendly input from the forum. Advice taken, please don't be harsh.

I have never heard of the RSPCA being called for a dog left outside a shop while the owner is inside!
The RSPCA is, to my knowledge, about protecting animals from cruelty, which this wasn't!
Our local supermarket has tie rings for dog leads. They are there because the locals asked for them. You often see two or three dogs tied up whilst their owners are shopping. I often see one of Perro's relations there, he's a big soft lad. And they all get a pet and a 'hello' from other shoppers.
My two are in the car at the supermarket. But if I go over the fields to the village post office I tie them outside. They are not left for long and they usually have their noses poking round the shop door to see what I'm doing.
We are on holiday soon, there will be times when I have to leave the lads in the car, there is no alternative. Obviously it won't be for long and the car will be locked. I will be acutely aware they are on a car park in a strange town but to be honest, if I let this paranoia get to me, I wouldn't take them anywhere.
There have been no cases of dog theft around this area. Yes, there is always a first time and I accept dog theft is on the increase, read the various websites and it's frightening.
But it does need to be put into perspective, it is alleged that 500 dogs a year are 'stolen', ten a week, compare that with 117,000 strays, and that there are millions of dogs in the UK.
Being sensible is the key, the alternative would be to keep them in a steel reinforced padlocked cage virtually all the time.
