I last posted on this forum about 2 months ago - when we decided to get a new puppy........Well he's now here!! He's 12 weeks old and has been with us for the past 9 days. He's called Rolo.........yes he's a choccy one!
He's settling in very well to his noisy household (we have a toddler and a 6 year old!) Crate training and house training, and basic training commands are progressing well.........no worries there really.
What I am concerned about is his constant hoovering and licking the floor.....it's now got to the point where he is on a long training line/lead around the house and garden.........there isn't anything that he won't try to eat! I know labs like to investigate with their mouths......but does this mean every single speck of mud in the garden, every dead flower head, woodlice........As far as I'm aware every plant in my garden is not poisonous - but what happens when I take him out into the big wide world (he can go out from this saturday).......pavements littered with trash and dog feaces, other peoples dead flower heads (maybe poisonous)...........is there any good training advice that can deter him from eating and licking everything? I should be looking forward to Rolo's first trip out into the big wide world.........but i can honestly say that I am dreading it .........as I know the trip will consist of him hoovering the grass and pavement. At least at home i know what he eats wouldn't harm him.
Is this something that can be stopped with positive training?........or is it something I will have to learn to live with because this is what Labs do? My previous dog was a boxer and she never bothered with trying to eat anything that wasn't food.
Any advice is much appreciated!!
Have attached a pic of him..........hope it worked!
aw look at his beautiful sad little face he is adorable. I'm sure others will be along with good advice but it's still something I have to be vigliant about and I've got an oldie but it does get better.
Have to say that Dibley is just like you describe. He is 7 months now. I don't know but they do seem to have a cast iron constitution to match the 'eat anything' habit.
My OH brought me home a little wild flower yesterday because he didn't know what it was. I put it on the arm of the sofa and before I could get on the internet or the wild flower plant Dibley had eaten it!
I am like you I do really worry what he eats but I am getting better at not worrying quite so much.
We are keeping a tally of the types of poo he has tried:
rabbit (a particular favourite)
horse
sheep
cow
Interestingly dog is not one he will touch, what's that about thanking for small mercies!!
It is a bit worrying at the moment because when we take him on walks all the trees are in fruit - what type of fruit I have no idea but he still seems okay!
Aww what a lovely boy, Bailey eats most things, flowers, mud, loo roll, cardboard and variety of poo, he's tried duck, swan, canada goose, horse rabbit and cat. He licks the patio, the back door step, kitchen floor, sofa,oh and me lol
Yes he does look rather sad in that pic..........probably more fed up than sad though.........took about half an hour to get him to sit and pose long enough for me to take a pic........it was also his 1st day home and was quite overwhelmed with the excited kids and new surroundings!! I will find some more pics and post them!
So basically with the hoovering and licking......it's me that needs to be more laid back and to try not to worry so much? I just worry that he will eat something really bad....he's only ickle!.......surely at 12 weeks his immune system isn't that good?
Should I be saying "No....leave it" everytime he eats something?? Feels like I say that phrase more than his name!! He probably thinks his name is "No....leave it"
I try and keep him away from it as well but he's a crafty devil lol he's even run 1/4 way back around the lake to eat it, hastily followed by me shattering the peace of the fishermen with my dulcet tones
