I know Vicky (VJH) had months of Ruby screaming in the night before she finally gave in and took Ruby up to the bedroom with her....She slept through the night from then on....and now she sleeps wherever she feels like, which is not usually in Vickys bedroom.
yep yep - we brought RUby home on oct 19th she cried every night until on 28th jan I gave up and brought her up with us and she slept through every night without a peep ever since. I know the 'rules' and I followed them for nearly 3 months but it didnt work - dunno why Ruby just didnt read the same books as me obviously.
Ruby as Jules said is now nearly 2 and she sleeps most nights downstairs through choice or in the spare room so she also breaks the rule that says if you let a pup sleep with you they wont ever settle anywhere else.
I wish I had gone with my gut when Ruby was teeny as 3 months plus with no sleep killed me - I dont have kids so was used to my whole nights sleep you see.
I wish you lots and lots of luck I know how I felt - useless and like I had failed but now I see Ruby sleep and she wanders - an few hours here a few there etc etc so no wonder she didnt settle in her crate downstairs.
Feel free to pm me if you need a rant as its horrible - oh and dont read the posts that say 'night 2 and not a peep' I used to read them and cry
I would very much agree with pre-empting him in the night. If he always wakes up around 2.30, get to him at 2!
We found that if we had to wake Baxter, he would be all sleepy, and it was very easy to take him out and he would have a half-asleep wee, and then when we put him back in the crate he'd be out like a light again before we had a chance to lock the back door!
If you wait until they cry, they've woken themselves right up and can take longer to settle back to sleep.
Oh believe me, if you read my previous post when we got our puppy I know how you feel!!!!
Griffin screamed the whole of the first night and then sporadically for the next week. We also knew the rules and what we should be doing but as our neighbours complained it was difficult for us to let him cry himself out. So we took it in turns to sleep downstairs (Griffin in kitchen, us on sofa in lounge) so he could hear us. If he started crying we sat near to the crate but we never let him out as we didn't want him to think that if he creid he's be able to come out each time. e left it for an hour or so and then tried taking him to the toilet to see if that was the reason he was crying.
After the first week he stopped crying and only whimpered when he needed the toilet. We gradually moved back upstairs (after feeling like we'd never be able to sleep in our own bed ever again!) and he is so good at night now.
He is 12 weeks old and 98% of the time will go through the night completely now.
So, don't give up and sometimes you have to break the rules if you have a rebel pup like ours!!
