the only downside is ppl could get caught up in them..
a few times i have had to reel jasper in quick because of a cyclist bearing down on us ..lol.. but mostly i tend to go were not many ppl walk.
the training lead is the hardest to use i have a 30ft one and i get more tangled in it than the dog does..LMAO.. so i prefer the retractable one..lol. its none tangle and comes ina nd out when the dog does..lol.

ed ited to add you have to make sure you have the right lead aswell for the weight of your dog as there is a chance your dog could snap the retracable lead (my lab snapped hers)
Oh i love mine - its perfect for the times i want bailey to have a bit of freedom but not be too far - usually along narrow paths - i can let him out ahead of me a little of behind and not be pushed into the bushes trying to walk at his side!
Although to be fair he's usually offlead and running or onlead and close, so hardly any use for it anymore
I hate the way the dogs run to the end and then nearly garrot themselves...I hate the way people walk along the road side with the lead still extending...I hate the way people moan that their dog wont walk nicely and pulls all the time, when the poor thing only knows that if it pulls then the lead gets longer......but most of all.....I really HATE the burns I've had round my legs (and behind the knees when I've been wearing shorts has been so painful I've nearly cried) when some plonker has let his dog run round me with a stupid nylon thin rope attached.
To be really fair.....if used properly then they are probably OK....but I've met precious few people who know how to use one .

stands up and is counted..lmao.. i know how to use mine..lmao.. i avoid ppl..lmao.. or he is reeled in and put on lock until person or other dogs have passed..lol.. ..lol..
I think it's because I live in Basildon...every dog owning wally seems to have it attached to one of these things.
I was walking through the town centre with Oyster the other day, when I saw a sweet little old lady with a little fluffy Bichon standing outside Woolworths...All of a sudden the Bichon shot towards me (she obviously didn't have the lock thing on) and it ran right in front of the doorways....Two people were just walking out of the shop and tripped over the trip wire the little dog left behind. They quite rightly muttered something under their breath....and the sweet little old lady exploded " WELL YOU SHOULD F****** WELL LOOK WHERE YOU ARE F****** WELL GOING!!!!!!" .
"Nice" I thought, as Oyster and I carried on our merry way .
Maybe these leads should come with a health warning.

I don't think they are necessarily a bad thing it just depends where or how they are used. We only use ours in places like our local country park. It gives her a bit more freedom in the wide open spaces where dogs have to be on a lead. Here they are great.
I prefer a normal lead in busier areas cos don't feel you have the same control. Plus you get the tangling risk. I had Abby on hers when she was younger and it got caught round my other dogs tail and back end. It spooked him and afterwards had to keep them well apart if they were both on flexis or he freaked.
The really dodgy bits are if your dog isn't used to it and charges around not realising it is on the lead. They can do some really damage if they are going at full tilt and then come to a halt the end of the lead.
Loads of people round here seem to walk there dogs everywhere on them, even on the pavements alongside the roads. It makes you wonder what would happen if a cat or something shot across in front of them, I'd never do it.
Forgot to mention, must admit we hardly use ours now either - we don't tend to walk her too many places where she has to be on, but it is always in the car just in case!
