ok were doing ok on the poops, she only seems to soil her crate at night when she has been left for any length of time (if i have an early night for example). This i totally understand as she cannot be expected to hold it in for such long periods.
However she doesnt wee in there in the night?
During the day she does all her poops in the flower beds (any suggestions to encourage her to do it on the grass? - its a messy business scooping it from my busy lizzies , without making her feel inadequate as up until now i have been jumping for joy at any business she does outside)
She does wee in the house during the day. I mop it with washing powder soloution or spray and wipe with a pet odour remover. how can i encourage her to wee all the time outside?
sorry for daft questions she is my first own dog (i dont include those i had as a child with my parents), and our first labrador!
What time does Banjo have her last meal?, maybe giving that to her a little earlier will encourage her to poo before she goes to bed rather than in the night.
I imagine she`s still small enough to carry atm, so when you take her out for a pee/poo put her on the grass, if she wanders off put her back, she`ll soon pick up that you want her to do her stuff.
Alternatively you could put a small fence along your borders, this may have to be raised as she gets older of course
we just took casper out every few hours and made loads of fuss when he went, also said do wees every time he went, and totally ignored any accidents inside just cleaned up,
he always went on the grass for both but as he got older 8 out of 10 times he wees on the flowers now we have some after the ripping them up phase
each puppy is different i suppose. Before we got our puppy we made an area on our lawn for pooh and pee. It is fenced with a little gate (the fence isn't too tall and hopefully when he gets big enough to jump over it he won't need it!)
Our situation is a bit different from yours as I believe you work and the puppy is at home by herself? My fiance works at home so this is what he does:
1. Morning: i take him out to pee and pooh (i wake up in the middle of the night when he cries to take him out and he always pees or poohs and hasn't had an accident in his crate)--put him bake in his crate and shower and then afterwards play--feed and about 10-20 minutes later take him outside again..play and he tires out and i put him in his crate to sleep and leave for work.
My fiance from then on, takes him out after ever nap and after every feeding..
2. Afternoon--same deal
3. Evening--walking always helps!
Bailey has been great at night! I feed him at 8 and he gets his last bit of water between 9-9:30 and we go to bed at 10:30..some people say to stop water at 8..but usually we walk from 9 to 9:30 and he's really thirsty so i let him have some water.
Our only problem is him crying when he doesn't want to go in the crate..its hard on my fiance as he's working in the next room..and well he usually lets him out so he can stop whining..he's only 7 weeks old so i don't expect him to stay in his crate for long periods at a time..
Hi Sally,
Our lab Chuck use to soil his at night when we first got him. To aid with the clear up i put newspaper down at the back of his crate, and his bed near the door. Chuck would always poo on the paper. we reduced the size of newspaper each night, it only took us a week to get him out of his habit.
Hope this helps.

Hi, our pup is 12 weeks and at the moment hes still in the kitchen, i leave a little newspaper down and he does his pooh wee there which is found by us everymorning! ... i just clean it up no attention or anything ,
I take him out at 11pm and say "go wee wees" he usually has a wee but wont do anything else! .. i stand out there for at least 10 mins, but nothing,
He had a whole day yesterday with no accidents in the house but today! hes weed had a pooh near the front door and then i caught him just squatting after his dinner i said "ah ah" garden and he stopped and went into the garden and did it! so MEGA praise!
not alot of advice but just wanted to say your not alone and it will get better ! hehehe (i hope lol)
We took Jet out into the garden on a lead and when he did a wee we said "piddle" now he piddles on command. As a puppy he was never allowed into the garden off lead so we always had control over when he went. That sounds like hard work but our garden is very steep (the back fence is higher than the roof of the house) so it was also for safety but it was also excellent for training him to wee and poo in a particular area. Now he's grown he still uses the same area for toileting which makes life easy for clearing up.
We used to give Jet regular oportunity to go for toilet breaks by taking him out on his lead every hour or so, soon after he had eaten, whenever he woke up from a sleep, before and after playing with him, and whenever we noticed him sniffing or starting to circle. Taking out means just that, on the lead and with you and big praise for actually weeing. If you want to try training to wee on command, timing is crucial, you have to say the word as they start to go to begin with, so they connect the action with the word, later on when they are older you can say the word and they'll go. They have to learn it first, does that make sense?
As for weeing in the house, you have to get her outside quickly. I would suggest that if you spot her starting to wee, tell her no, pick her up and get her outside, even if she is still going, then praise her for going when she's out there. If you can confine her to an area of the house close to an outside door so you can get her out with a minimum of fuss.
Good luck with it, a bit of hard work with them in the early weeks pays off in the longer term.

7pm after we have eaten our dinner.

great idea! now why didnt i think of that?
Baileyjames, i am a stay at home mum so at home nearly all of the time! both kids are just under school age (eldest starts nursery in september - its a 5 min walk to school and there is a big park next door so will be ideal for walking Banjo as she gets older).
This is what i do:
6.30-7am wake up rush downstairs and let her outside, stand there shivering in my dressing gown while i wait for her to perform. Sing and dance and make a HUGE fuss of her when she eventually does. back inside to get dressed, make breakfast for us all.
7.45am Banjo is fed. Its after we have eaten breakfast, and it will be earlier in september when we all have to get up earlier to be at nursery for 8am. Then we play and do some basic training. Then she is back outside again until she performs (and another huge fuss made of her when she does).
1pm Banjo has her lunch (again after we have had ours), and again more playtime and outside to perform.
3/4pm she has usually had a longish afternoon nap so when she wakes we go into the garden for some training and again waiting for her to perform.
7pm banjo has her evening meal. again straight outside to do more training and playtime, then waiting for her to perform.
at about 9 i remove her water bowl and then at about 11pm she goes into her crate and i shut the door. She only ever cried that first night, so she doesnt wake us when she wants to toilet. Her crate is just the right size for her at the moment with a little bit of growing room. Its actually the crate i use when we have kittens. i will be buying a bigger crate as she grows, but i didnt want her to think soiling her bed area was good so stuck with the smaller crate first.
In this weather the back door is always open with access for her to go into the garden.
When she wee's im the house its never in the same place.
Anyway thats our daily routine. She hasnt finished her immunisation course yet so it will be another few weeks before she can go on walks.
Bluecow I think that having the back door open with free access to the garden may be part of the problem with weeing in the house, if you aren't with them each and every time they wee you can't praise them/make a fuss when they get it right. They don't know how pleased you are they have done a wee in the right place and so wee anywhere, with the door open and free access there is no differentiation in their eyes.
It was summer when we house trained Jet and we had to use stair gates across the conservatory and back doors as they were always open and I also have two children, so I do know how difficult what I'm suggesting is to actually do.
If Banjo continues to have mishaps in the house it may be worth restricting her access to the garden unless supervised for a couple of days. You'll be amazed at how much progress they can make in a short time.
