Ripley will be 12 wks when we go to the Lake District, so obviously can't walk very far, only for about 15 minutes a day (I think). My OH thinks we can pop him in a backpack so we can go further afield. Is he mad? Does anyone have any strategies for dealing with this?

And does anyone know of any good dealers for travel crates? All advice appreciated (he will have had his jabs and been chipped by then)

At what age did Ripley have his first course of vaccinations? Normally, you have to wait a further two weeks after the second course of vaccinations before taking puppies out in the big wide world.

Personally, I would not want to take a puppy so young on holiday. I very much doubt that Ripley would want to be in a backpack and there is every chance that he could wriggle free and jump/fall out.

My own personal feeling is that Ripley, at 12 weeks of age, would really be better off at home getting used to his home territory and getting him used to a routine, which won't happen in a strange house - it will all be a lot for such a little pup to take in. Can you not postpone your holiday?

These are just my personal opinions. I am sure someone else will be along shortly to help you out.

If you do go on holiday - have a good time!

Mish

I also think it would be mad to try a backpack! Just wanted confirmation really.
He has his second lot of injections tomorrow, & then the vet said he would able to go out a week after, so he'll be well clear when we go. I'll be taking all his familiar stuff, & if it means me staying with him in the cottage so he feels comfortable, then that's what I'll do.

I tend to agree with Mish. Do the people you are renting from know you have a 12 week old puppy? I must admit I wouldn't be too chuffed if I'd agreed to accept a dog but someone turned up with an unhousetrained puppy.

we took Ruby away at 19 weeks - to a rented cottage she was fine. We restricted the length of time that we went out and just lounged around the cottage rather than going out for hours. Hubby carried her when she had had enough exercise - you can get specially made pet carrier back packs for the purpose although all this depends on how big your 12 week old is

Thanks for all the comments, it will need careful planning! I'll be taking a crate for night time, which Ripley is used to, and for the last couple of days he hasn't had any accidents in the house, just a nighttime wee in his crate if we don't get down early enough!

Lorna that pic is amazing! How old/big is that clever lab? Did he/she enjoy it? Was it an ordinary backpack?

As long as you are prepared to make arrangements so that you don't over exercise him, I can't see why you can't take him away with you.

I think I'd only had Oyster 2 weeks when she came on her first weekend away with me. I personally think the earlier they experience everything life is going to throw at them, the better. Wink

Thanks Jules, that's good to hear. It's definitely the exercise bit that I'm concerned about, I want to be very careful with him.

I'm impressed with the camping Wendy, specially given the kind of weather we get here!
