ive just tried taking Bosun out for a little stroll out the back of my house and i couldnt get him to move off the step he just sat down i tried a treat but nope not interested he starting whining and pulling back towards the gate
I gave in as i just couldnt get him to move and as soon as we got back in the gate he ran down to the door!
Any ideas why this is or what i could do to get him to walk lol ..
Are you calling "Let's go" or "Come On Bosun" in a really jolly exciting high-picthed happy voice? It needs to be really OTT sometimes, as though going with you is the bestest thing in the world....
Is this his first time out? Has he had the lead and collar on before?
Hey thanks for your reply, He has had a collar and lead on before, we dont take his collar off Hes been out every evening for 15 mins and its usually a struggle getting him out the gate but today was worse! ....
I did the whole "come on bosun" gooood boyyyyyyyy come onnnnnn all daft and silly patting my leg come on then come on ! the usual daft child like high pitched voice lol treat in hand also
but nothing
Do you have a car? It may be an idea just to pop him in the car and go to somewhere safe to let him have a little walk, where you will be the only thing he knows, or just carry him out of the gate and down the road a little, so he has to walk to get home. It is a big scary world out there to a young pup, before long though you will find he learns to love it
____________ I am only responsible for what I say, not for what you understand !
Unfortunatly i dont drive yet, we always use the back gate when going out so he knows and is familiar with it and the road area to the back , he usually just sits there and takes a little coaxing but today has been worse!
he startd whining to! just hoping it doesnt last as once hes out hes normally fine sniffing away sitting watching the world go by but today he was not going to budge !
we had a problem getting zak through the gate at first, and then once we had coaxed him through he would walk a short spell then freeze and not want to move, walks would take forever and really amused our neighbours, i tried bouncing a ball just in front of him and this worked to a small extent it took his mind off his fear for a little while, once we got him to the field and let him off his lead he was fine and would trot along happily at our side, eventually it passed and now at 10 months old we only have to mention the w word and hes up and waiting to go out, so i think you just gotta keep patient, keep coaxing and eventually he will realise just what a treat it is going beyond his safe zone,
I'd pick him up and carry him a short way from the house before he even has a chance to put on the brakes......You have to remember that the outside world can be a very scary place to a tiny pup, so even if you carry him, then sit somewhere with him for a while until he looks comfortable, this will be better for his confidence than trying to force him in anyway.
When he is comfortable with the big wide world, then try letting him walk away from the house again.
Bess was the same, when we did managed to get her out onto the pavement she would take a few steps and then refuse to budge.. it as a very slow process.. did I pursevere and work hard.. no I gave in and got my mum to bring her elderly jack russell along for walks, Bess loved her and happily followed her along the road.. after a few walks Bess had enough confidence to go it alone.. so if you have any friends nearbye with well behaved dog, see if they will accompany you for a few days
