Have just read this discussion and am finding it very helpful as I am trying to decide who to get insurance for Belle from. I have got 6 weeks free insurance, but a man called me yesterday about renewing, and I said I hadn't decided yet so he is going to call back.

Think my Mum is with M&S for her youngest, and Pet Plan for her oldest, but changed to M&S for her youngest as it was cheaper than Pet Plan.

I like the idea of AFI and all the money going to animal charities......wouldn't mind paying a bit extra for insurance with them (if they are good enough) as it means more money is helping animals.

Thanks to everyone for all the information above!

we got 5 or maybe 6 weeks free insurance from the Kennel Club with Pet Plan via the breeder, and I'll likely carry it over. I'm sure when I looked the premium was £25 a month (or there abouts) Our vets bills in this area are said to be lower than in the rest of the UK (according to the vet!) so maybe thats why it wasn't so much.

Thats interesting, Keira had her TPO surgery down your way, all in all about £3500 (not insured Embarassed ) I wonder if anyone knows how much it would have cost in other areas??

I'm with M&S for both of mine and it costs about £225 per dog. I did just look at AFI and i like the fact that every breed costs the same no matter what postcode but it works out alot more expensive for their best policy compared to M&S.

I'm disapointed though that M&S have changed their policy since even last year by taking the 0 excess away but i'm now reluctant to change because any condition i've been to the vets for won't be covered with any other insurance company now, even though i don't claim for everything Rolling Eyes

I think pet insurance should be like car insurance and go down if you make no claims and i also think the policy should have to stay the same each year (eg. not allowed to take the zero excess away)

although m & s dropped their zero excess - and the cost went up this year - i am happy to stay with them as i think they still represent good value..........

however if you have never had a claim it might be worth shopping around at renewal time..........

some insurance company are low for the first year and then hoik their premiums up at renewal time...

if your dog is getting to 7 or 8 - ask what the excesses are for an older dog

i am happy to stay with M & S as they were so brilliant when I needed them

Never insure direct with E&L - they are terrible! Took 6 months for them to settle a claim on Max then they deducted 35% of the claim because he was over 8 years old Evil or Very Mad

I have just had a talk with the Manager at Animal Friends Insurance who I am with and as you know, even though E and L are their underwriters, I have never had to wait for a claim - now I know why.

This is the live chat conversation:

Sarah: Hi, I notice that E and L are your underwriters, but E and L have a terrible reputation for payouts if insurance is direct with themselves.

On your website it says we have to contact E and L directly for a claim. What if there is any delay or awkwardness in a claim, do you provide backup for your clients in such circumstances?

You are now speaking with Manager of Sales.

Manager: Hi Sarah, I can confirm as an Animal Friends customer you would benefit from the agreed turnaround times for settlement of claims. Any problems our Customers have regarding a claim, they can contact us and we do endeavour to resolve them as quickly as possible. I hope this helps.

Sarah: Thankyou, I already have insurance for my lab, and now want to insure another dog, but when I have mentioned that E and L are underwriters everyone is having their (negative) say.

Sarah: The insurance is with yourselves for my lab and my other lab was insured with yourselves.

Sarah: Could I also ask what the agreed turnaround times are please?

Manager: E and L have to contact our clients within 5 working days of receiving a claim form and in many cases they may request for more information.

Upon receipt of all outstanding information, they issue their decision and if they accept liability, they send out an offer letter.

Upon receipt of the client's agreement to the offer, they have to settle within 5 working days. I hope this helps.

Sarah: Yes it does, thankyou very much.

So, after looking around for Indi, being a Newf, many are asking an extortionate amount, I am staying with Animal Friends.
