I had Troy insured till she was 8 spent a fortune but never used it.
We started of this time with Poppy with Kennel club insurance but that was close to £20 month. I thought what If I don't use it!
So after the 12 months was up I started shopping around now I'm with the Halifax got a small monthly dog insurance bill of £6.66, it covers her for what I need.
that covers as follows
vet fees £1000 per year
behavioural problem £200
euthanasia cremation £100
death from illness £500
death by accident £500
theft/straying £500
third party legal £1m
accidental damage £500
kennel fees £500
holiday cancellation £1000
pay vet direct yes
find a vet yes
bereavement councelling yes
pet legal hepline yes
pet minders helpline yes
i know it can feel like a waste if you have a dog insured and never need it ................ but if you do need it, it's a great thing to have
the only thing i would say is that your insurance - though inexpensive - at £1,000 for a claim, really won't last long.............. If your dog has to be referred or has anything "substantial" wrong with it that your own vet has to deal with - that £1,000 will soon be spent..........
I too would be very nervous of only having £1000 a year for vets fee's.
I have very, very rarely claimed on my cat's insurence but it would be sods law for him to need expensive vet-treatment if I cancelled it!
I'm with Pet Plan and, although I believe its one of the more expensive insurance deals, I can't fault them for paying out on claims. They even once paid for my old lab to see a homeopathic vet (on my vets referral)
We are with M&S and they cover £7000 vets fees for a premium of £200 - in rubys first year the preium was £127 and we claimed about £200 worth so well worth it and that was only minor puppy stuff. I dont think we will have made near £200 this year but hey at least I dont have to stress about money if anything horrible should happen.
I`d be wary of only £1000 a year as well, is that per condition or total?, if its total it could be gone in no time, even if its per condition it could used up quickly if Poppy turns out to have a joint condition or even has an accident that involves a broken limb.
There are several members here who`d tell you they were very happy have a policy that cost more but gave them £7000 (M&S) which was all used in the year to pay for treatment that would otherwise have left them either having to tighten the purse strings or make the decision none of us would want
I agree with the above comments...........£1000 doesn't take long to mount up
We are with M&S for Izzy and last insurance year, our claim total came to £4000 for a torn cruciate ligament, it has covered 2 ops, several x-rays, hydro-therapy, travelling costs to the specialist and the hydro-therapist, there would have been no way that I could have paid for all of this out of my own pocket and the quality of treatment would have been limited.
I've moved all my dogs to M & S. they are incredibly easy to deal with and pay out easily ...................... will insure a dog of any age (unless that's changed) - i insured my perfectly healthy but old collie - and 3 months later he was diagnosed with cancer. He had previously been with Petplan but when he hit his 10th birthday the premium went up considerably + the excess was 35% and the excess was too high in my opinion so I cancelled it.
Even though M & S's premiums went up by 50% this year, they are still very competitive priced..........
Talking to people at a referral place who had £2,000 of cover with their own insurance - it wasn't lasting long ....
I think the best advice i could give is ask your vet's receptionists which companies are easy for them to deal with .... if they tell you "x" company are difficult when it comes to paying out claims avoid them...

ps on another note - i am really lucky as both my own vet and the referral place were happy to be paid direct by the insurance company - and i have to pay at the end anything still owing (i.e. excess) - but talking to others some vets insist on being paid at the time - and then the owner has to wait to claim the money back ? what do your vets do??

I am with Animal Friends insurance and they have never been any trouble for paying out.
After looking around, these, IMHO offer the best cover for the best price, with an excess of just £45.
There are several reasons why I use them, the main one being price AND the fact that they are the ONLY UK pet insurance business to donate 100% of their net profits to animal charities worldwide.
They also do not go off postcode OR breed, everyone pays the same for their dog under 8 or over 8 years as the case may be, and everyone pays the same excess of £45 for a dog under 8 years.
For £19 per month I get £5000 per year vet fees - BUT this is PER condition, which is good, so, theoretically, the dog could have two seperate conditions and I would then get £10,000 per year.
Not only that, but it is also LIFE cover which is very important, so the condition will be covered throughout life unlike many of the same price range which don't allow you to do that.
The policy I have has recently gone up to just over £24 per month, but still represents very good value for what you get.
You don't have to pay this much though, you can get full life cover and vets fees per condition of up to £2,000 per condition per year for as little as £16, and as profits go to helping other animals, for me, this is the best insurance.
