Hi everyone,
We are new to the site and will be collecting our first ever labrador next Friday. He will be 8 weeks old on Tuesday and he's such a sweetie!! We are still thinking about having two puppies but really can't decide! So any suggestions on living with two labbies would be most welcome. The pup we have chosen we are calling Murphy, and he is a lovely chunky bundle! We are counting the days! Will add pics soon x
Hi there and welcome to LF , we tend to recommend that people don`t have litter siblings, they tend to bond with each other and not with their owner/s, personally I`d have murphy and wait a while to get another so that you can get Murphy trained and more mature and able to accept another pup, this way Murphy will be able to teach the pup how to behave rather than the two getting together and creating havoc
Having said that, there are members here who have pups who aren`t far apart in age and they do very well.
One thing to think of though and I know this`ll be hard when your just getting a pup, but if you have two of the same or similar ages then when the time comes for them to go, it may mean losing both within a very short space of time.
I speak from experience hear, having had 3 similar aged dogs (not Labs) and losing all 3 with 5 months of each other, its very hard to cope with believe me.
Welcome fellow chocoholic!
I'd third the litter siblings thing - our dog Rosie was the unwanted one of a double-puppy-purchase that didn't go well - anyway, why not wait, let the fun last longer by spreading puppyhood out over 4 or 5 years! You'll be a better owner if you can give Murphy your undivided attention, and he'll be the better dog for having it.
Personally, I would definietly wait a little while for pup number two. You can give the first one all your attention, you'll bond with it more and it'll be easier in house training and lead training etc, then once you're comfortable and enjoying that it'll make trianing the second one much easier as you won't have to watch two little bottoms, and pulling on the lead etc.
One pup is a shock to the system (a lovely shock but a shock all the same!!) Personally, I think 2 at the same time, however tempting, would be a bad mistake. Like others have advised, enjoy Murphy's puppyhood and then you can enjoy a second one at a later date, if thats what you want.
