Hi i picked my puppy up this evening he is 11 weeks old and has been fed on Iams! ... I was told that this is awful as can cause problems in their senior years!
is there a dry food anyone can recomend ? i could then wean him from one to the other over the course of a couple of weeks!
All mine on James Well beloved. Baxter my choccie has a dodgy tum and this is the only food he seems ok on after loads of experimenting. Maggie will eat anything so changed her over as much easier to have them on the same food and Darcie pup was already on it. So makes life very simple.
Personally i like it and am happy with the way mine look very hard to choose with so manybrands out there.
Think you have to look at suppliers as some places some foods are hard to get, having said that there are some good online companies that deliver .
I would recommend either Burns mini-bites or James Wellbeloved puppy... although I feed Burns adult to my older dog, I have been reliably informed that JWB Puppy is infact better quality than Burns Mini-bites.... so little Jake will remain on that until he moves over to adult food.
If you ask 10 people this question you will usually get 10 different answers. We all have our favoured brands, for different reasons. What I would suggest is that you ask yourself what you want in a complete dog food. Do you want moral issues to be considered? Organic? Made in this country? Hypoallergenic? (be aware that 'chicken and rice' does not work with many dogs allergic to meat or grains - it's all very well sayong it's hypoallergenic, but it's not hypoallergenic for your dog if your dog does not get on with one if the ingredients). Price? - all of the above are great - so long as you can afford to feed a premium brand.
There are many foods available, and maybe not all will suit your dog. Personally I swear by Wafcol as it suits ALL my dogs including the allergic-to-everything one, and deplore Burns due to the lack of condition I see in most dogs fed on it (when I tried it mine lost too much condition really quickly). Many people swear by Burns particularly a workmate of mine who is sponsored by them but still adds extras for his working dogs , James Well Beloved is also considered excellent (didn't suit my choc). They are all premium foods. Autarky suited 2 out of my 3 when I tried it (not the black) but was at least a lot cheaper.
I would recommend you think about what you want in a food, go and look at the choice in Pets at Home or your local retailer/wholesaler (it always helps if you can get hold of it easily when you run out ) and then make a decision from there. Buy a small bag to make sure your puppy lieks it, and change over very slowly at that age (keep him on Iams for a week or two as a complete change of scene, water and people can be more than enough to cope with in one go).
Xena makes a lot of sense... I've recently had the same descision to make for my pup... for ethical reasons I wouldn't feed Purina which he came eating from the breeder. I flipped back and forth and back and forth and back and forth again before finally deciding what to choose. What Xena says is good advice. Think about whats in the food, what it costs, and if there are any moral reasons you wouldn't like to use a particular companies food. There are a lot of good foods to choose from.

I feed Ellie Beta puppy. My mum uses Beta for her dogs, and suggested it, but Ellie seems ok on it, although I'm not sure how ethical or good it is......how would I find that out? Are the other brands available from normal pet stores? I quite like the idea of trying her on Burns as it's not tested on animals and being vegetarian myself - that appeals........
There is an old wives tale about every food - There is nothing wrong with Iams any more than you will hear another slanderous statement about ANOTHER food... pedigree Chum is a classic case... people pull back horrified when someone admits to feeding it, yet its the most popular food in the country and best marketed with millions behind it! Iams ditto - very established.
Sometimes I think these companies start silly rumours about each others foods as a competeitive thing
Any good quality complete food, IF it suits your dogs digestion and pocket is perfect! ut your fingers in your ears and sing 'la la la la la' when someone starts waffling on about it being bad... it may BE bad for THEIR dog but it suits YOURS!

I FED ARCHIE IAMS AS THE BREEDER STARTED HIM OFF ON IT
FOR 18 MONTHS ARCHIE HAD TUMMY PROBLEMS AND BAD SKIN AND FUR LOSS,ALLERGY TESTING REVEALED HE WAS ALLERGIC TO BEEF,PORK AND LAMB.I CONTACTED IAMS AND THEY TOLD ME THAT THEIR FOOD CONTAINED PORK FAT
WE NOW FEED BURNS AND ARCHIE IS DOING WELL ON IT,IT HAS NO ARTIFICIAL STUFF IN IT ALL NATURAL INGREDIENTS
HOPE EVERYTHING WORKS OUT FOR YOU,IF YOU CHANGE HIS FOOD MAYBE WAIT A FEW WEEKS AND THEN GRADUALLY CHANGE HIM OVER.LIKE DIANA SAYS IF THE FOOD SUITS YOUR PUP THEN THATS FINE IT JUST DIDNT SUIT MY DOG
KIRSTY DID YOU GET BOSUN IN CORNWALL?MY BREEDER WAS IN CORNWALL AND BOSUN LOOKS LIKE MY ARCHIE WHEN HE WAS A PUP.I HAVE NOTICED THAT NOT MANY BREEDERS FEED IAMS SO THATS WHY I AM ASKING.HOPE ALL GOES WELL,ENJOY YOUR PUP
Classic case... a bad experience above so absolutely right to change BUT if your pup is going on fine, then stick with it, don't swop for the SAKE of it.
