Out of pure nosiness what were your reasons for breeding and did you keep from the litter? Wink

Same question from me too!! Would you like to tell us KC names of Mum and Dad so we can have a look at the pedigree? Yes, we are extremely nosy but it's all fascinating stuff and thanks for posting. Very Happy

Want to thank Sally for an informative, realistic, excellently summarised account of a good birth. It a shame you are not a member so we can see the progress of mum and the pup you kept.

Very Happy

Thank you. Both Mum and pup are doing very well.

All owners I have spoken to report their puppies are doing very well.

I am now enjoying the process of training the pup. It is very interesting to see how he interacts and learns from his mum.

There is no doubt he has picked up that I am the boss but some advice on how raising a puppy with its mother/an older dog is likely to progress and any potential issues that might arise would be appreciated.

Is it pretty much guaranteed that the puppy will always be subserviant to the older dog or is this parent/pup relationship going to develop according to the dogs' relative personality traits - meaning the male pup could just as easily grow to be the dominant of the 2 as it matures ?

one thing that is obvious atm is that my pup has no problms getting to food intended for his mum. He will pretty much get most things off her and into his belly and she is largely happy to let him have something he has gotten off her. mum occassionally does a runnr and gets herself in a quiet spot if it is something particularly tasty !

I had the pup out pretty soon after his jabs - I know vets recommend you dont let them out in public for two weeks after their second jab and i was perhaps taking a risk, but he seems to have come through that without any issues and i was of the opinion that it was a fairly low risk hed bump into a sick dog/source of infection ANd not have enough immunity to ddeal with it if he did. Wouldnt recommend that approach to a first time owner however.

Swimming-wise the puppy is happy to follw his mum into the water and I just have to watch nervously as he tries to ride the waves at the beach or swims a fair way out in ponds etc.

He is somewhat selective as to which occassions he will swim, alternating between wading in and waiting on the bank after gettin in to his cheast and actually swimming out to meet his mum on her return - so at least he seems to have some natural instint that he needs to become a more competant swimmer before he can follow her out every time.

His retrieving is coming along. But I have to seperate him bevause when he is with mum his retrieving consists mainly of chasing his mum and getting what is in her mouth/or trying to and I asume he will think that is his role rather than retrieving and returning to me.

I dont particularly want/need him to only retrieve when I ask him to and let his mum retrieve but I would like him to learn to retrieve for me when I want him to.

I am happy to say my house is almost back to normal now and the smell seems to have gone !

You might find it usefull to do a bit of training just with the pup on it's own - it's easer to keep the pup focused on you and it gives you a bit of quality time with the pup without the mum 'fighting' to get your attention too...

Keep us posted on the progress!!

Hi

The pup that I kept from my litter has, I am afraid moved up above her mum in the pecking order and is very bossy (very similar to her dad I am afraid). Mum Gem is bottom in the pecking order again! Smile
