hiya
i am new too but havent actually got my puppy yet. i have been waiting as i am going on holiday in oct and dont want to settle in new puppy then have to leave or a week. (sounds sensible but is killing me a s i cant wait) as my whole family has had this booked for ages and no one is left to dog sit and dont think i like the the idea of kennels
in the future it will be fine as got a caravan so lots of doggy holidays from then on.
i know i am doing the right thing but am i going to have trouble getting a pup in the winter as i dont know how much longer i can wait. will breeders sell before christmas or is it harder to find breeders with pups in the winter months
Hi and welcome! In the grand scheme of things a week's holiday isn't the end of the world but i know exactly what you mean - i am already worrying about a 2 week family holiday in Feb!
There are pups available in winter there was a thread recently discussing the pros and cons of breeding at different times of year and to an extent it does come down to personal preference - but i think most good breeders would avoid breeding a litter that would be available for xmas. Pud came home on 25th Feb last year (when we had lots of snow!). Downsides where standing outside in the snow and dark encourgaing him to 'go wee', but the nights did start to get lighter and by the time he was able to start going walkies the weather was improving. It was nice to be able to do the 1st 6 months in spring/summer - lots more socialisation opportunities etc. By October it was too dark to go to the beach of an evening so we lost out on meeting up with doggy friends etc.
Good luck with your search for the perfect pup! Do you have a breeder in mind? It is worth starting to ring around to see if there are any litter planned for the time that suits you. you may even be able to find a breeder who would be willing to take pup back for a week when you go away!
We picked Angel up on 7th December and out of a litter of 9 pups there was only 1 in there that was being a Christmas pressie.
As Leanne said it has it's down sides with toilet training etc. as it's so cold at 4.30 am and you're stood at the back door encouraging pup to wee and you have to watch them like a hawk to see the signs for needing to go out.

thanks hadnt thought about cold evenings and wees etc.
. i have been speaking to diana who has reccommended some breeders who have pups now ready sept time. who are local to me and all look great. but i have been holding back beacause of week away in tenerife ( wish wasnt going now)
i didnt know breeders would take pups back for a week that would be great i suppose it depends who they are. and if i could leave puppy behind.
i know it sounds selfish but i just want to get puppy now as been waiting until my daughter old enough and not sure i could wait until spring!!!
thanks for all your help i am new to all this and dont really know what to expect.

Hi, if it helps my puppy was due to come after my holiday, but things worked out a little differently and I had her 4 weeks before we went away. My breeder offered to have her back, but we decided to get my sister in law to have her, as she is very doggy like me, and she had a fabulous holiday, grew a lot, but she still remembered us when we got back, and S.I.L had carried on with all her socialisation and training, just as I knew she would. Things can work out well x

I honestly wouldn't say you were being selfish if you got a pup now! It's not as though you are planning a 6 month hol There are lots of different options available for dog sitting some are more costly than others but if its only for a week! Do you have any friends who would be willing to look after the pup for a week - either at their house or stay at yours? Or there are some good kennels, the best option by me is the training school that we attend - they have dogs boarding during the day (and do doggy day care) and a trainer takes them home each evening. Or you could look around for a dog sitter who would either come to your home or takes dogs into theirs.
it is definitely worth looking into the different options if you would prefer to get a pup sooner rather than later. Having an annual one week hol shouldn't be a barrier to getting a dog it just needs planning for. I was lucky last year as my parents had pud but this year i went away with my parents so asked a dog walking friend to have pud for the week.
my family are all coming on the holiday and i have no friends locally that can help for one reason or another.
can anybody recommend anyone in the sompting area of west sussex.(near worthing)
i know i am being a bit previous but i feel i should think of all this before i go and get a puppy and have no one to look after it for a week in oct. or should i just be patient and wait??? hhheeeelllpp
To be honest, as you can't leave her with family and if you like a breeder well enough to have a pup from them, and they are willing to have puppy for the week, as most would, I would go for that option. The breeder already knows and loves the pup anyway Make sure you discuss it before you view the pups.
