Do bitches, when they come in season, bleed first or become swollen first. This is my bitches 3rd season so you'd think I'd know! Embarassed

They tend to wee a lot and swell a little behind, then come in. rarely do you not get ANY signs a bitch is about to come in season and these are the commonest two.

My dog has just started her first season.

She is just bleeding slightly, but prances about like a horse when she is on the lead!! She is also quite swollen down below.

Vet has told me she can be 'caught' anything up to 4 weeks from when she started bleeding. Obviously i dont want that, but 4 weeks seems a long time? Advice/Comments gratefully received.

Lorraine.

With my bitches (before they were spade), they tended to become swollen first and also a bit irritable around the other girls (had no males then). Then the bleeding started and they became very swollen!

Molly's last season was 28 days long, so to be careful for 4 weeks is not unreasonable Smile

We mated an outside bitch on day 23 of her season recently. I would *imagine* she will take from either of the day 19 or 21 matings BUT her hormone levels were still showing viability.... so thats a good long way towards 4 weeks.... and believe me on that day 23 she was BEGGING for it still Wink

OK, so I take it I count day one as the first day I noticed blood?

I must sound so thick, I can't get my head round how dog and human cycles are so different!!

I just DO NOT WANT my 10 month old pup to get pregnant.

Thanks for your posts guys, it is very helpful to hear from those who know whats what.

Lorraine.

Yes you do - day one is the first day you see a splodge of blood. Be careful as some bitches keep themselves very clean, so put a white or cream sheet over her bed for a couple of weeks when she starts to either swell a little behind, wee a bit more, get overtly amounts of attention from dogs (and bitches!) on a walk or she spends time licking and biting at herself more than usual... get the sheet out, then you won't miss that first night she loses blood. Where as on blankets or vet bed or whatever she usually sleeps on, depending on the colour of the blanket, you might.

Then count along from that day one.... usually lead walks in secluded areas avoiding other dogs days 1 - 7 or 8, then in till about day 22/23, then a week of secluded lead walks again then test the water back with other dogs.

Days 10 - 18 of her season are MOST bitches red hot for mating AND CONCIEVING days.

Thanks Di, we are now in day 12 of Nell's first season, and coping well, I think!! Nell is keeping herself very clean, it's just when walking her, although I try to keep to quiet areas and times, I have come across some dog walkers who are very annoyed that I am walking a 'bitch in heat' ON THE LEAD!! while their dogs are running OFF THE LEAD!! Sorry, but I have to excercise her, what else can I do??

Lorraine.

TBH, it is rather cheeky to walk you bitch in areas where others will be walking their male dogs off lead.......................I walk mine, but I keep them on the lead and away from off lead dogs throughout their season
.......................and around their most fertile days, I keep them at home and they have to go without.
