Hi LF people:)
Greetings from Australia, I have been lurking and reading these forums for research before we brought our 7.5 week old puppy home. Her name is Zoh and she belongs to my bfs family but I sleep over most nights and she is very much my own. Just wanted to say what a great forum this is... I have learned so much about having a puppy from here and it definitely put my mind at ease on the first two nights of whimpering and howling.
Zoh lives with a family of 5 loving people and its been 4 days now and she is so well adjusted. She has a dog bed which she sleeps in in the laundry, we haven't crate trained her but she is already practically house trained without it and she loves being the centre of attention. My bfs mother has taken a week off work to be with her at this crucial stage and she will be alone for 3 hours after this time, we have been leaving her for 10 minutes at a time in her laundry room with all her toys and her bed and she has been amazing! Crying a bit but settles down after 5 minutes.
She does have a very strong doggy smell, is this normal for puppies? We have given her one bath just to get her used to water and activities that she might need to partake in later on in life, however she is still smelly!
Thanks for the great reading and research:)
Sara

Hi Sara and welcome to you and Zoh If you mean by 'puppy smell' a smell of wee-wee, then this is normal when you first pick them up, as they have usually rolled in someone's little accident! It should decrease though if her skin is in a good healthy condition
She looks really sweet and you're doing very well by the sound of things
Don't worry about the smell - all puppys smell very strongly. Most people quite like the smell of pups and their breath and you'll certainly miss it when its gone in a few weeks
I don't think washing will rid Zoh of the pup smell and washing vigorously isn't too advisable at 7.5 weeks anyway. A damp cloth to rid of any urine / poo she's got on her is enough.
I think the smell is meant to be something to do with their tums processing mums milk. I know after several weeks on solida it disappears.
looking forward to more pics of Zoh - is she black? looks like it in your avatar but its quite small to see properly?
