I thought I'd show what a difference a coat makes
OUT OF Coat jade:
IN Coat Jade - literally a few weeks later weight exactly the same:
Look particularly at tail, chest and how she looks far less 'flat' in her chest and shoulder and other deceptive things...

That's amazing....No wonder there are times when I think Mojo has gone thin or got fat, yet when I weigh her she weighs the same .... And no wonder so much fur ends up all over the house.
oohh is out of coat when they lose their undercoat? If so that would be another reason why Ruby looks like she does as she has no undercoat - hmmmmmm maybe?
Rach - Thank you, star pupil for a sensible question.... top of the class
Yes she looks 'well' but its a bit like someone going out on the pull with a REALLY crap haircut and white stilletos and black tights.... but underneath the haircut and shoes they are really beautiful....
The trouble is many people will be in that nigthclub in superb shoes and a Toni and Guy haircut and so you will feel like a fish out of water even if your basic shape is good
A lack of coat means a lack of tail too, a very important feature of our breed. It also changes the overall view of substance - jade looks like a horse about to run in the grand national in the first but the Labrador is a middleweight hunter not a thoroughbred, so in the second shot, with a tail and coat on she looks as our breed should to the best of her conformational ability.
So yes she would be penalised for being out of coat, and therefore it would be throwing money down the drain to take her even if she was entered, as she is in the first photo. In the second she would offer herself at the best of her natural 'looks' and that is what ideally what you offer a judge when standing in a showring.
Some dogs have so much coat that even 'out of coat' they can get away with it'. But most don't. Its about pulling out when you know your dog is not even nearly at its best as it is a beauty contest after all.
