I have to get up with Alfie, 13 weeks, every morning between 4 and 4:30 to let him out for a wee. He drinks a lot of water and my vet said I should take his water away from him at 8pm. I am reluctant to do this, any opinions?
It is quite common to remove water overnight, I lot of people recommend you do this...
When we got Jake from Di, she also advises to remove water after 8pm, but we aren't that strict and we just don't let Jake have any from bedtime (approx 10.30-11.00) until morning and he usually wakes at around 5.30ish... we get up at 6am anyway (why can't he go that extra half hour LOL )
When we first got Oscar we used to remove his water from 7.30pm unless he seemed particulary thirsty in which case we'd let him have a small amount.
We now leave a full bowl in his pen 24/7 (he's now 6 months) and have done for about 3 months. He learnt really quickly to hold it in overnight, and most of the time he doesn't even touch his water til after his breakfast.
I still get up at 5.30am every day though and let him out in the garden, then take him for his walk, then feed him. I guess it's all about routines.
I've got to admit I've never left water at night. I dont exactly remove because it's never in the house anyway. Since all of my Labs have enjoyed a paddle, the water is always available in the cover/utility room.
Well, I took his water away last night at 8:30 and he didn't wake me up this moring till quarter to six! It may just be a coincidence but I will carry on removing his water, thanks for all the advice.
interested when you say your dogs like a paddle i am presumimg they do what truffs does that is she dunks all her head in and then often splashes her paws in like a child in a paddling pool, she to has a bowl outside and on e in the utility which is placed in an empty litter tray to try to catch some of the 'spillage'
Getting a puppy in the summer, during the light mornings, is always a little more difficult than the winter when it's dark. But the mornings are now slowly drawing in so you should find things getting slightly easier. And of course, by next summer the pattern of sleeping will be set. Dog's body clocks soon set themselves to the human time patterns.
