Just taken Maya to the vets to be chipped and have her first injections, and the vet says she has a hernia, anyone else had this with their puppy and is it a common thing?
Vet says it'll probably seal itself up and if it doesn't it's an easy simple thing to fix... but its still worrying and we don't really want to subject such a young pup to GA Sad

It is likely to be an umbilical hernia - it is nothing to worry about, and they do mostly go on their own without any intervention.

Is the lump on pups tummy or chest? Does it feel like a soft bean underneath the skin?

My Bella had one hers didnt go on its own so they fixed it when she was spayed. It never caused her any problems I just kept an eye on it incase it got bigger but it was fine.

Yes it can occur if mum tugs a bit too hard on the ubilical cord when the puppy is having the sack broken and the cord cut when born.... if they tug too hard a hernia can occur.... some clumsy mums cause several in their lives Wink

I hope it heals on its own. But if not your vet is right it is a very minor op.

Di

As Di says it can happen with a clumsy dam, but it is far more likely to be a hereditary congenital problem.
If it does not close of its own accord, it is a very simple operation and you should have no further problems.
However, I'm surprised your breeder has not mentioned it to you - she certainly should have informed you and given the option of refusing the pup with a problem. In fact, I would contact her and let her know because she should not breed from the bitch again. In turn you should not breed from your girl (not saying that was your intention, but just in case you ever think of it in the future).

So glad you're happy - it's not really a problem unless you want to breed, but please do let your breeder know - she should not breed again from her mum.

Maya was from the breeders last litter so she'll not be breeding from her again, and will let her know when we call her up Smile
And Maya's just going to be a pet! Can't really have puppies running around, cute as they are Razz
Thanks again *hugs*

Kat-S, you really feel that one hernia - especially when it is not proven to be hereditary yet, should mean the Dam is not bred from again?

Are you from Scandinavia by any chance Wink
