The whelping box is up, newspapers have been collected, towels have been cut in to puppy sized pieces, the whelping chart has been made, the scales, torch and hot water bottle are all on stand by, the vet bedding is washed and folded, the camp bed is ready, the scissors have been sterilised, the enquiry list is getting longer and the food cupboards are well stocked..........am I missing anything?
Molly! She is splendidly huge! We can see and feel plenty of fetal movements and her milk is seeping out - but I wish I could tell her what is going on as her expression is one of confusion. She can no longer carry out her ablutions very well and the stringy stuff is really annoying her. Obviously I'm helping her and reassuring her as much as I can as we head in to our last week.
Good luck Nicky - however well prepared you are there is always something you just can't find at the right time!!!
I have to say I am just recovering today from a very traumatic day yesterday whelping a Norfolk Terrier bitch which I am afraid ended with an emergency caesarean but the result was three pups all alive and thriving. But oh the stress of getting all three pups breathing especially the one that was blocking the exit, making sure that the mum is introduced to the pups correctly so she does not attack them and then fingers crossed that she actually produces milk so hand rearing is not necessary!! I definitely feel the need for news of a straightforward labrador whelping.
