Have some concerns at the moment about Penny's coat. Not as shiny as normal, and she's got a bit of dandruff. I use Vitapet Moult Formula but this doesn't seem to be having the same effect as previously.
Looking at previous posts regarding skin and coats I've found a recommendation for a tin of pilchards/sardines in tomato sauce or sunflower oil (drained). Would like to give this a go with Penny and see if there's any imrpovement.
Would tinned Mackerel, Tuna, or Salmon be as good or are they not oily enough.
Thanks
Trina

Hello Trina
I tend to use sardines only for my dogs, I havent really thought about using anything else. I would not consider giving them the fish in brine, just in sauce or oil.
Hope this helps

Hi Trina, If you are contemplating giving extra oil for your dog's coat etc then you would be better off giving Fish Body Oil. FBO cannot be OD'd on, are full of essential Omega 3s which are low in both commercially and raw fed dogs as cereals make up the bulk of commercial food and so have high levels of Omega 6 but low Omega 3 and most meat is grain fed and has the same problem.
Omega 3s are also excellent for brain health and joints. This has been proved on experiments on both children and dogs Another excellent source of Omega 3s are oily fish either fresh or canned eg mackeral, pilchards, sardines.
Pilchards/sardines/mackeral have all the Omega 3s which can be absent from tuna
Both Salmon and/or Fish Body Oils are valuable sources of Omega 3s and EFAs, if you do feed it please ensure that you also give Vitamin E along with it.

Hi Trina
I do give mackeral in tomoto sauce, but only when the store hasn't got any pilchards or sardines, cos they're quite a bit more expensive
Tuna does not contain the same levels of Omega 3, so (although good in itselt) won't have the same effect. Not sure about Salmon, but hopefully Kay will see this and be able to tell you.
Just out of interest, what it he fed on, and has his coat always been a bit dull with dandruff?
regards
Jenny

Jenny
I suppose her skin's always been a bit dry and she did shed a lot (like them all I know) that's why we started her on moult formula. It seemed to work really well at the beginning but not so great now. She's on Pedigree Adult complete at the moment, with the occasional half tin to make it more interesting, but we will shortly be going on to food the kennel owner recommened (the name escapes me at the moment but I can check) because she felt Penny was perhaps getting too much protein.
Once I start her on the fish, should I cut out the moult formula or continue with it. Also Kay, should I just get vitamin E in capsule form as if it were for myself, if so how much and is it daily or weekly with her fish?
Thanks to you both
Regards
Trina

If Omega 3's are what you want, you should have a look at the Vitapet RA formula.
It contains a blend of fish and vegetable oils, rich in polyunsaturates, especially the omega 3 nutrients, as well as vitamins A D and E.
Although they market it primarily for mobile supple joints and supple joints, it seems to contain the ingredients that you're asking about.
