Please can anyone offer advice?

We bought our puppy home today and when bedtime we put him in his crate - no fuss- and went upstairs to bed

however he howled and cried so much the neighbours complained so my husband has had to go downstairs with him to quieten him down and provide some reassurance

i KNOW this is wrong and belive me is not the way we intended to do it - if we had lived in a detached house we could cope

Can anyone help me out as i know we've caused more trouble for ourselves and now he'll prob never be able to be left at night

I just don't know what to do and am so upset that this has happened

any advice gratefully received

thanks for reading

Have you tried taking the crate up to your bedroom.

It is his first night away from his mum and litter and he could be feeling a bit lonely.

Did the breeder give you anything that smells of his family? If so, try putting it in the crate. Cuddly toys are also a favourite. I used to pinch my daughter's. These ways it would be one of mine Rolling Eyes (Don't ask!!!!)

Hot water bottle with warm water in it covered in a towel.

Ticking clock.

Just off the top of my head.

What is his name?

Hilary

Like Hilary said, if you really cant leave him to cry (or rather your neighbours cant) Rolling Eyes then maybe you could start with the crate in your room and gradually move it away until it is downstairs when he has been with you a while.

If you don`t have anything that smells of his mum and siblings, try putting in something that you worn thats oldish or your not bothered about loosing it, he`s been in the house long enough to pick up your scent and this will hopefully help him to realise that you havn`t abandoned him Smile

Or as Hilary suggested take his crate either to your room, or outside on the landing so he can hear you and your OH, also have you got the crate covered?, this will help him to feel more secure in what is for him a very strange enviroment Smile

hi hilary

thanks so much for replying

yeah we've tried everything bar having him in our bedroom (it's right next to the neighbours so if he cries still they'd hear it even more)

he has a blanket from his breeder in there, a ticking clock, toy, but it doesn't seem to be helping - we are both so upset as although we knew it would be tought, the neighbours have made things a bit harder by comlainng (which is totally and perfectly within their rights to do as they obviously can't sleep)

i am so motified by all this and am just in tears - it's all going so wrong

thank you so much for all your advice everyone you don't know how appreciated it is - i thought you were all going to shout at me!

Oh dear I am sorry you have had a bad time tonight, its very hard and as you say going in can be making a rod for your own back but you cant upset the neighbours either, Poor pup (sorry dont know the name) is missing his mum and siblings and never been alone before, has he or she got a teddy, also give him something with your smell on, a tee shirt you have worn all evening or hubby's try that.. is there any way else in the house he could be, where he will not be heard by the neighbours? is haveng him upstairs with you both right out of the question?

i hope you can all get some sleep soon x

Can't agree more. Also, don't get too stressed about this, it's like having a baby in the house that cries, they are just babies really and whilst I can appreciate that noise during the night isn't great for anyone, the neighbours will kind of have to understand! Crate in bedroom sounds good....Honey cried for the first couple of nights too. I actually went around to my neighbours and said we've just got a puppy and sorry if you hear yelping but it can't be helped to some extent. It soooo doesn't last long. Just remember to enjoy your fur baby and sod the neighbours!!

It will get better..................

Have you tried leaving a radio/tv on for the pup - buying a kong and fill with nice titbits - that your pup can chew on - which it won't chew on.. leaving another dog in the room with your pup .......

make sure the pup has had a nice play before you put it in at night -- so that it's really tired....................

speak to your neighbours and apologise and tell them you will sort it .........

sadly if you keep coming down every time the pups makes a racket, it'll keep doing it !!

good luck...............

Poor you. Any chance of pacifying the neighbours rather than the pup? Do they know he's very little and that this might only last a night or two (fingers crossed) if you can all grit your teeth.

Another good bet is putting a radio on very quietly in the room he's in - bit of ambient noise can sometimes distract and comfort them.

When you go down to him do you let him out of his crate?
