Ok I say *some* because there are good guys, sadly, why Oh why do I run into so many stories of total incompetent idiots ;-(

These incidents BOTH happened in the last 7 days:

1) A lady who has been booked for stud called to say her girl had been bloodtested and would start ovulation in 48 hours so could we arrange the first mating. I had asked her hip score at the first contact - "7" was the reply - super. I asked if she had been eye tested - " absolutely".

So When making the booking she asked what she should bring, i said her pedigree, her original hip score certificate and original eye test certificate.

" CERTIFICATE? I don't have a certificate, the vet just eye tested her himself and said they are fine.... "

I said 'You are kidding?'....

"No", Said She, "I took her there and asked him to hip score and eye test her to the standard the Kennel Club and breeders require... and he charged me X amount FOR an eye test so i presumed that was it"

Ok, so the Kennel Club require nothing but lets put that to one side right now... Wink

So, I said (panicing), has he definately sent the hip xrays to the BVA and you have a score... and she was adament and the form was Green and yes it was all above board, but he had EYE TESTED HER HIMSELF! What a PRATT of a Vet! Why SHOULD she know if HE said he had that all covered that he was completely wrong?!

Anyway I asked her quickly to call him and ask if he HAPPENED to be a BVA/KC panelist in the faint hope..... She called me back having, as a very capable and well meaning lady taken everything into her own hands. She had contacted her vaguely local panelist and booked a private test for the next day... and rung and told her vet that what he had done was totally inadequate and that she was now going to a proper eye testing specialist which is what he should have told her to do from day one. His reply left me dumbfounded.... gobsmacked....

(Him in a sarcastic Voice.....) " Ohhhhh, AREN'T we doing it the POSH way, Dear.... "

Aggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

--------- ----------------------------------------

2) A VET, a fully qualified completely above board VET rung me from the vet group I use. It wasn't MY Vet (who is fantastic) but a vet from another practise....

She said she had been put onto me by my vet and she wanted to buy a chocolate labrador puppy. I said I could help her find good breeders of course. She said 'well its as a suprise present for my Aunt'.... I asked if she meant she was buying it and Auntie would be going to see the pups and meet the breeder.... " Oh No, its a complete suprise, and I want a litter ready as soon as possible because she has her eye on a litter and I want to get in first to thank her for XYZ she did for me...."

I, covering my amazement, managed to ask if she had considered that any decent breeder even half worth their salt would want to meet the Aunt to make sure she DID want the puppy and wouldn't get it, smile politely, then put it in the freepapers! The vet got the hump and basically said if I wasn't going to help her them she would get help elsewhere!

No problemo honesy, do so!!!!!

Sighhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

often wondered what vets actually learn at collage?

it is not bed side maners thats for sure

my vet gave up years ago, trying to tell me how to go about breeding a bitch, when asked how many litters he had of course his answer was none of my own only the ones in the collage.....most likely a poodle or something defo not labs

funny he calls me sometime to ask for help if he gets in an inexperienced lad folks.....funny how time changes foks to our way of thinking lol

I have a theory...You see we all only have so much room in our brains (a bit like a hard drive on a computer Wink )....and all that book learning they do takes up so much space, that the Common Sense dept is given the elbow. Wink

I'm afraid in all our years of training we have a hell of a lot to learn and things like how to buy a puppy are not surprisingly something which isn't in the curriculum. Please remember- we vets are people too and all different! Yes that other vet should have known about eye testing- that is something inexcusable but I'm afraid there are people with no common sense out there. A prime example is a girl in my year at vet school who has just bred a litter of chocolate puppies from her lab and didn't even eye test, and this lab also has a range of behavioural problems which unsurprisingly are now a lot worse Rolling Eyes

Yes there are some incredibly clever people who have no common sense but I'd like to think some of us have a bit of both!

You may criticise vets, but I can tell you dog breeders are notorious amongst vets and get a lot of raised eyebrows too lol!

btw I can give you 5 full ring binders of lectures which I had to learn for 2 exams this year- and as you say that doesn't include any practical skills or the bedside manner!

I'm not trying to pick a fight- but I am very daunted by the fact when I start working all people will remember is the things you get wrong, not everything you do right!

glad to hear you are one of the many vets out there that do have knowlage as well as common sense

good for you

my brother went to collage and did all his degrees and got loads of certificates and guess what ,.......... he has no common sense what so ever

I dont think all vets are daft just some......I have met a few who are in it for the money only and have no compasion for the animals.....yes I know that that vet is in the minority

on the whole where would we be with out you...........................as Di said her own vet is a star as is my own we just sometime come accross the odd one now and again

Very Happy
