I make sure Genie (14 weeks) has a drink and I take her for a wee before I put her in the crate. I wouldn't leave her any water as she'd play with it and particularly at night I don't want her drinking and soiling her crate... Her last drink is around 9ish and she goes outside to wee before we go to bed and then she lasts until the morning.. there's never been a problem with this, sometimes when we put water down as soon as we let her out, she doesn't even want a drink then! I wouldn't leave water in the crate unless I was leaving her for more than a couple of hours...

I have had the bolt on bowl since Dibley was a tiny pup. I also have always left water for him because I have never moistened his food and I think that makes a difference to what you should do.

Dibley has never tipped the water over BUT, I am still trying to teach him to finish what he has in his mouth before he walks away from the bowl and dribbles copious amounts over his bed or floor depending which water bowl he is drinking from Wink

Thanks for asking this question Rach I must admit I was unsure as well, those bolt on ones look good, although I'll show that to my OH and he will say "we won't but one I can make one" lol such a cheap skate. I mught have to buy it and show him when it comes LOL.

I never leave water in the crate over night. But then, I never take a drink to bed for myself either Wink But of course, if you are leaving a dog during the day then yes, you will need to provide water.

Regards, John

I know everyone has different views on this - but I always leave fresh water bowls in the crates day or night - I did have a problem with Clover digging it out - but she did it one hot day, must have realised she was thirsty and hasn't done it since Rolling Eyes

I use earthenware bowls, and find they will only upturn them if they are empty Very Happy

Myself I never leave water in a crate not overnight and not in the day. I don't crate for more than 3 - 4 hours in the day if ever, and never in direct sunlight or by a radiator so they are perfectly absolutely fine without water both overnight and for those 3 - 4 daytime hours as long as it is avaliable other times.

You make it very hard for a puppy to control its bladder if it can constantly top up.

Di

I have never left either of my 2 without water in a crate when they were pups, Molly had one of those earthenware ones, so she couldn't tip it up, but she loved to splash in it Rolling Eyes Izzy has had one which has a bolted holder with it, so it can't be moved, she has never splashed in her water Laughing

Oh.............and niether have ever had any problem with bladder control, both have gone through the night since around 9 weeks old. Smile
