Hi after writing the post a little further down I bought a crate and it has helped with rooney no end, but there is just one problem now and I really don't know what to do about it? I always take him out after food, naps, playing or if it has been a while since he last went. Most of the time he will go for a wee of more but sometimes I am stood out there foe ages and nothing. The problem is, if he doesn't go he comes in and has now begun to go in his crate right in the middle of his bed! Before we had the crate he would come in and about 10 mins after going in the garden and not do anything he would start sniffing and circling the lounge and I usually had time to run outside with him. Last night I stood outside with him for about 35 mins and nothing so I went back in as it was late and I needed to go to bed, I waited a couple of mins, put him in his crate and gave him a little treat as I always do at bedtime, then right infront of me he wee'd in the middle of his bed!??? I shouted no and took him back outside but as he had already done it he just ran about like a bu**er! I cleaned up put him in crate and went bed. I came down this morning and there was a nice dry bed as always (this is how I know he can do it). About 1 hour ago I took him out as he had just woken up, all he did was keep picking stones, grass and anything else he could find and running away from me, it was as if he was challenging me to chase him, and when I did catch him he instantly dropped what ever he had. He refused to go wee, so I brought him in. About 5 mins later my son needed changing so I gave rooney a treat in his crate cause otherwise he runs off with the nappy! I went to walk out of the room, turned back for 1 second and he was weeing in the middle of his crate and watching me at the same time as if he was thinking "ha now you gunna let me out" lol. I changed baby and left him in there. I let him out, took him outside and he went loo straight away! Is he doing this as a way of telling me he doesn't like the crate or is that a silly idea? I really need to get some tips as I am running out of sheets for his bed! He can sit, come and we are working on stay, he is a calm dog with a lovely temprement there is just this problem to sort out help!

What a little trickster! Sounds like you are doing everything that has been suggested on this forum. I would just make sure that when he does go outside that you either have a treat ready for him or you praise him like mad...then if he does wee inside just ignore it and ignore him whilst you are clearing it up. When Molly weed inside I used to shut her outside whilst I cleared it up.

It does take time, but consistency is the key.

Perhaps shut him outside whilst nappy changing too until he's toilet trained?

Oh and don't forget to say a word or phrase whilst he is going to the toilet so that he can make an association with the word and the toiletting. Then you can tell him to 'go pee'... and one day he might just do it!! Smile

When I was house training Milo he only weed once in his crate and that was the 1st night. So while our circumstances are not the same what I would suggest is literally staying outside (even if it is for a whole hour) saying 'quickly' and when the job is done, lots and lots of praise. I did have about 2 weeks worth of weeing in the house and when I could see he was about to wee, I would literally scoop him up, rush him out the back door and say 'outside, outside!' That seemed to do the trick and he quickly got the hang of it. I think if your pup starts to wee inside, as soon as you see a trickle, quickly get him out. Even if he does one drop outside, praise him and he will soon learn that is the place you want him to do it.

When you take him outside for a wee or poop, praise him everytime after hes finished. Treats hugs and kind words "good boy, clean dog, well done!" and say it in a high tone voice showing the dog you are pleased. Give him a small treat or tit-bit too, just to show him how wonderful he is for doing it outside.
We still get accidents indoors with Leo and he is almost 20 weeks now and it can be very hard and frustrating, i know. (Even more frustrating when you have a cream carpet Shocked lol)
Just keep at it, it will get better with time and patience.
Good luck, keep us informed in how you get on x

Mario picked it up extremely quickly (very lucky I know!)

Lots and lots of praise when he's been good, ignore the accidents. If I came across him weeing inside, I'd immediately pick him up and go outside without being cross and say our key word 'wee wee'. Even if he just managed the last drop outside, heaps of praise again!

It has helped that the training has all been in the good weather and therefore the back door has been open all the time. Mario goes in and out as he pleases which I'm sure has helped too. The first 2 months it seemed like my eyes were following him everywhere but it worked.

Sometimes now (almost 6 months) when I let him out for his late night circle of the garden and wee, he's more interested in what he can smell or play with. It can be frustrating playing the waiting game but I've started to bring him back in after about 5 minutes when it's obvious he's not performing and ignore him. About 10 minutes later, I take him out again and say firmly 'wee wee' Mario and stand at the door. This has helped us as Mario knows that I'm not going to wait outside indefinitely (I would but don't want him to know that!)

Good luck - it will suddenly click one day and you won't even realise you haven't had an accident in ages...

Baileys fine if the backdoor is open, well, just a min ago he went out for a wee without me taking him out. But its hard to tell when he needs a wee or just sniffing generally!
