Hello Everyone!, Im new here but have been on Labradorforums for quiet a while(as a guest),
a month ago i brought sunny and hes growing up very quickly, Iv added a video here, he bites me alot and very hard, but other people he just licks them and stuff but when you start to play with him he bites you. Does anybody know how i could stop this or at least make him bite less? Please help as i have been bitten arround 40 times in 1 month and 2 or 3 of them are very severe bites which is still healing.
Thank you in advance.
Awww lovely photos of Sunny, i remember those crocodile teeth well !!!
There are several methods for teaching your pup that biting is not acceptable, you can try saying OUCH whenever you get bit and ignore Sunny so there is no reinforcement for the biting or we found that giving Abbey time out worked best for us whenever Abbey bit we put her out in the hallway for a max of 5 mins then opened the door so she could rejoin us but i never fussed her or spoke to her for a good few mins. We were very consistent with this and did it every single time she bit and it worked for us !
Thanks!
I tried the "Ouch" this a while ago, well it was painfull because he continued even if i said ouch because he thought i was still playing, i tried to ignore him, but then he started to bite my feet , well i forgive him but his teeth are very sharp, notice on the first picture(I took a month ago) he had a right tooth, but at the moment in the last picture you can see he has one took chiped if you look closely, this is because he was bitting the sofa. well i realy want a painless way, the second method which is locking him outside for a couple of minutes worked!, but for a minute or two, when i started walking around the garden he chased me again! , lol. Is there any other ways you can recomend, Again thank you for your reply.
Hi Eskick, welcome to you and Sunny, he`s a lovely pup.
Play biting is antural thing for pups to do, they do it with their siblings only they squeal when hurt and so the pup usually stops, with us humans they don`t realise that we are much more delicate than a puppy
I notice in the video that the person taking it was running backwards when he started chasing their feet, this made it a great game for him, what should have happened is, filming stopped and ignore Sunny by turning their back on him, no matter how he tries to get your attention totally ignore him til he stops.
Once he`s done that tell him he`s a good boy, if this sets him off again, back to ignoring, make sure your back is to him so he can`t make eye contact.
Labs above all dogs hate being ignored, they are people lovers, so Sunny will learn that if he displays unacceptable behaviour he gets ignored, if he`s good he gets praiseed and fussed.
I also notice he appeared to have the camera strap in his mouth in your pics?, don`t allow that either or he`ll thing everything is fair game.
Others will be along with hints and tips as well no doubt
Thanks for your advice Mary, i would be trying that from now on, btw, he had the camera strap in his mouth for a couple of seconds, because it was attached to my phone, it was hard to get it off him though i was worried he might chip another tooth, Your advices are very helpfull and i would be staying active on this forum from now on .
Btw, *Another problem *, He stays in the garden arround 10 hours per day, And he has a toilet problem, He does it all arround the garden which makes it hard for anyone in my family to enter the garden, I tried a few ways of teaching him, Like buying puppy training pads, and placing them in a corner of the garden he seems to have ignored it, I followed instructions on the cover of the 'training pads' but had no luck. The pads fly away most of the times.
He also had one or two in his room but ignoring it which is another problem, Has anybody here know any good articles or tips/advice for toilet training a puppy? Would be a great help. (Hope im not asking for much )
When Archie bit us we would make a high pitched squeel and then put him in another room behind a baby gate so he could still see us.Everytime he did it we would remove him from the room and the attention he was getting and ignore him,He stopped after a week!
What a lovely puppy and lovely photographs. Seeing the puppy razor sharp teeth certainly brings back memories - ouch! We adopted the high pitched squeel when he was mouthing us and it did work. As soon as you "squeel", take your hand away immediately and look away. When he's calmer, play again and repeat if the mouthing starts. DON'T WHATEVER YOU DO, SMACK HIM ON THE NOSE EITHER WITH YOUR HAND OR WITH A NEWSPAPER. Just withdraw your hand after you've squeeled and he will soon learn what is not acceptable.
