Hi,

I would just like to ask any breeders out there, who would do what? I am looking at using a particular stud dog for my bitch, hopefully to mate in September. I have a dog in mind who is 10 or 11 years old and at limited stud. My question is do I use him (risking a small litter due to waining fertility levels) or do I use on of his sons (hopefully getting a larger litter), or am I wrong in thinking the older boy will produce a small litter. It will be my bitches second litter, as I know first litters are usually smaller than subsequent ones. Thankyou in advance for any opinions.

P.S Di, hope to see you tomorrow for a chat and a cuppa! Smile

It depends on the dog IMHO. Is he still producing decent sized litters? Why is he at restricted stud?

A son of his may be an idea, but what if their dam's breeding doesn't suit so well? They are only half that dog after all, and unless closely line bred may produce slightly different pups.

Some of the older, proven and producing dogs at the moment are still producing the goods - if it's one of these then I'd have no hesitation in using the known quantity.

Who is it then Wink

How do you know that he's fertility has gone down? The numbers of pups are not just determent by the dog but to the numbers of egg 'released' by the bitch in a season - a bitch have a set amount of eggs for the whole of her lifetime and she only releases x-amount per season. I theory she releases more when she's young and less in her senior years...

The most common cause of a stud dog being limited to a number bitches is pure and simple because it's a though job to be a stud Laughing Laughing Laughing Before the days of artificial insemination many older top stallions used to be limited to x-amount of mares in a breeding season.

If the stud is the one that will match your bitch and you're happy with his health checks I would use him...

Hi,

I knew that would come up. Wink Carpenny Walpole! I was going to use one of his son's but this particular dog that I really like isn't Optigen tested and my bitch is a carrier so NO WAY am I going to do that! Then I just thought - why not use Walpole himself as I know he is clear! I know Penny very well and she says he is at limited stud because of his age but I don't know what size litters he is producing. Penny is going to look into it and let me know. He fits in with my lines and more importantly, he will improve the things I need improving on my bitch. BUT there is the yellow gene issue. My bitch is choc but MAY carry yellow. I have just sent her swabs off to Healthgene to find out if she carries Yellow. Her father is black but carries choc AND yellow (Ole). I want a black dog carrying choc, which I can still get ONLY IF my bitch doesn't carry yellow, and I will still have to test the litter for black carrying choc, as I will have some Black carrying choc and some black carrying choc and yellow, which isn't a problem as I will have to Optigen test any boys to keep a 'clear' one - so will be testing away anyway!!.

Hi Trace

I agree with Natasha as long as yours is a relatively young bitch. The only time I would disagree is if it is an older bitch having her last litter. Two oldies do not make for a good match less eggs and lower sperm count.

Hope that helps.

All the best

Nice choice!

Personally, I would try it, although can't say I've noticed what size of litters he's thrown recently.

It's very difficult trying to find a decent black dog at the moment. Particularly if you're looking for one that carries chocolate and ticks all the boxes health-wise Wink

Which son of his was it you were interested in?
